Mites? Parasite?

timmah Aug 03, 2009 08:42 PM

So, I had my python out the other day and i noticed a small black bug crawling on him and it looked like he has some white specs on him as well.

What steps should I do to rectify this, I have about 15 snakes near each other, but I do not see any of these bugs in the other cages or on the other snakes.

Thanks in advance.

I read about using Nix or Sevin Dust

It said spray snake and cage and remove waterbowl, clean it after a week??

hmm sounds dangerous to snakey

first and foremost, i would treat all of them to be safe. do not spray anything with such harmful chemicals right on the snake. whether it says its ok or not. i have had mites twice in my snake career. the first was with a rescue boa, that was absolutely covered in them. the second was back when i used that cypress bark crap (im 99.99999999% positive i got a bad batch of that stuff that wasnt pretreated properly and there were mites in it), and my two breeders for this coming season (hopefully) had a few on them and in their cages. i went to petsmart and got stuff callee jurassimite. its an all natural mite erradicator. i was very skeptical the first time (which was on that covered rescue boa). it is fantastic. the mites were fully gone on the boa in about 5 days. and in my retic breeders last year, they were gone the next day. and because its natural, you can use it on the snake, in the cage, on the bedding, and any decorations you may have in there, and you can use it as often as you need to, since it is non-toxic. i figure, why not try something that is non-chemical and non-toxic to them first and see.

I first noticed them like in the corner of his eye lid and his left eye lid looks weird now, like they ate around his outer skin on his eye. One crawled out from inside there and I was like wow what the #$#@$ is that.

I did some more checking and I think i found a few in the other snakes waterbowls

The same snake with mites also has these white spots on him too.

what i did, was, i soaked my boa that had it real bad, 1-2 times a day, then when i put her back in her newspaper lined cage, i would spray her with the natural mite erradicator. mites cannot live under water, therefore, soaking them in addition to treating them directly with anti-mite stuff, it works well

The natural miticide works great. One trick I used was to buy a dog flea collar and cut it into 2 inch long strips. I then place a strip in the cage. I don't like dipping my animals in pesticides if I don't have to, (and I hold a pesticide license from the Dept Of Agriculture.)

hi, i would start by thuroughly cleaning and disinfecting all your reptiles cages! then i would soak all your reptiles in warm water with a little bit of dawn dish soap and a little bedidine mixed in to it. the soap lubes up the scales so whater can get under them and the bedidine will help heal any sores that may of came from the mites. this will drown the bugs. then you can buy these things from wal-mart called pest strips that you can hang in your reptile room or in the room where you keep your reptiles. iv had very good luck with this methed. you can keep peststrips hanging in the room for previntion to.
