Supposed normal female to mojave male with pastel male back up throws this?

Ended up with four egg clutch: two slugs, one never developed veins, and ONE fertile egg. I was expecting my luck to bring me a normal male as usual.... but then this pops out! Could it be that my 'normal' that I've had for years (though this is her first clutch) is actually a cinnamon? I bought her from a pet store for 25 bucks as a normal.

Just to look at her she's normal as normal could be, but then she throws that crazy baby.

She has a nice head pattern, any close up pics of her head, and a closer body shot?

How about a belly shot too. The hatchling sure looks like a pewter to me but mom doesn't look like a cinny to me. . . . . Hmmm??

That's what I said! Mom looks NOTHING like a Cinnamon, but what other explanation is there? I'm stumped! Here are some more pictures of baby.

I'll get the belly shot as soon as I get more batteries for my camera... check back this evening. Her belly has a lot of pattern on it, though.

I'd venture it was likely a case of sperm retention. May explain why all the other eggs died as well -- she was using really old sperm.

Congratulations on a nice looking baby.

That wouldn't explain a pewter. You'd have to have the Pastel sperm mix with the retained cinnamon to get that and that's just stupid. I'd say possible axanthic genes would be a more likely explaination than retained sperm.

toshamc Aug 04, 2009 10:23 AM

If it were previously bred to a pewter it could retain pewter sperm and produce pewters later on.

He said that she was bred to a mojave and a pastel as back up last year. She obviously retained sperm from the pastel breeding.

She was not bred this year.

One thing you might think about is that your pastel and the mother are both het for Axanthic and you didn't know it. It looks kinda like a pastel axanthic.

SugarFox03 Aug 04, 2009 12:10 PM

That pattern looks nothing like the pastel axanthics I have seen - it's much too funky. As well, I think it's MUCH more likely that female is a cinny vs BOTH parents being het axanthic. Just my $0.02

Only way to know for sure is to breed her again and see what comes out!!

Congratulations... I'd say you have something going on here... I hatched a similar-looking animal in 2006:

The female was also normal appearing... in my case, a straight breeding of pastel x normal... now obviously there is something going on with the female... I've named the dark looking female "Espresso" and the cross an "Espresso Pastel". In fact, the cross likely should of been called Espresso Pewter. This year I line bred this female and got what appears to be 7 normal looking babies, to my great disappointment. I was expecting a patternless animal. Perhaps I missed on the odds? I'm not sure... the pewter looking female I produced in 2006 is a bad eater and not yet ready to breed and I doubt it will be breed for the 2009 - 2010 season... I suspect they are cinnamon type animals that just appear to be normal looking. Work on that project and keep us posted, I would not be surprised you'd eventually get patternless animals from that line. Hope that pewter looking animal is a male... good luck!

Regards,
Bristen.
