rats or rabbits?

eschmit04 Aug 05, 2009 03:56 PM

Hi all, I have a quick question. I breed my own rats at this time for my snakes. But I am having a hard time breeding enough rats, and growing them out to large enough size for my boas. I currently have 8 female breeders and two males.

My questions is should I breed more rats, or start breeding rabbits?

Is there an easy way to breed rabbits???

I am currently feeding:
adult dumeril female
yearling dumeril male
yearling brazilian red tailboa female
young adult brazilian red tail boa male
Large Adult female Guyana red tail
yearling purple albino retic male

two new retics, and suri to come soon..

Thanks,
Ed

I would get more rats, they are more prolific and it would be faster to grow the rats to size and the quantities would be easier to achieve with rats then rabbits, litter size growth rates etc....this just and opinion however and I could be wrong but the numbers make sense to me.

I breed both rats and rabbits, and I find it beneficial to raise both . I raise rats up to med size , and then switch the Boas over to fuzzy bunnies from their . I raise large breeds of rabbits, so they have bigger litters (10-15 babies per litter), and grow faster than the smaller breeds of bunnies . Raising a rat to XL size can take 3 months . A bunny the same size takes about 4 weeks or less. I personally could not do it without the bunnies

Thanks for the post! I think I am going to maintain three rat colonies (one more than now) as well as start 2 does of rabbits. What kind of rabbits would you recommend? I was thinking maybe a new zeeland whites. People around here use them as meat rabbits.

thanks,
Ed

That's interesting, I've been thinking of breeding rabbits as feeders for some time now. What breed of rabbit have you had the best luck with?

I've enjoyed working with Checkered Giants the best , as well as New Zealands, and Californians . Right now , most of my does are mixes of those three that I've raised up .
