Tip of tail fell off

jamesalternafan Aug 05, 2009 05:30 PM

When I received this animal it had an incomplete shed. The tip of its tail (just the tip) had stuck shed that would not come off despite all efforts. I decided to see if snake would shed it on its own. It did not and now maybe a 1/4" piece of the tail has fallen off. Do I need to worry about infection or anything else or should the snake still be fine? I obviously would like to avoid a vet bill if I can, but do I have something to worry about.

No. It should not be a problem, however it may continue to happen. Make sure the snake is well hydrated and ensure the shed is complete every time.
It is a circulatory issue.

I agree with the above post. However it is more serious in a snake than a lizard. Keep the area very clean, and I might suggest a paper towel substrate until completely healed (next shed). A humid hide with damp sphagnum moss sounds essential as well. I say sphagnum because it's less particulate than say, peat moss.
