nice batch from these two

DMong Aug 05, 2009 10:37 PM

This '07 pair of brooksi made a nice little pile of nine huge eggs this year.
Hard to believe their only just turning two years old now, and the male is well over 1000 grams!. Lots of other different types of cool things are going to be produced as well.....can't wait!..LOL

Welcome back!

DMong Aug 06, 2009 10:15 AM

Thanks Tim, I'm glad you like them as well!. I can't help but to think that the offspring these produce will also be well above average in coloration as they mature.
And YES!,.....it feels great to have a computer again and be a part of the forums for sure!..LOL!

Should I keep the hatchlings all together for their first few feedings after they hatch??.........just kiddin' of course LOL!!!

DMong Aug 06, 2009 08:08 PM

Thanks Todd!, but I really was just making a very general silly comment about opheophagous snakes such as my floridana, and not hoping or intending to beat a long decomposed horse carcus from the distant past. I'm sure you would agree that feeding all the youngsters their first few meals in the same enclosure wouldn't be a great idea at all, no matter what the case. I would like to think that some casual funny sarcasm from time to time doesn't always automatically signal a big red flag for everyone to commense pointless arguements. If anyone were to feel the need to start bickering from the brief comment I made to Tim about it, then I would be stunned and genuinely surprised to say the least,..know what I mean?

Anyway, it's good to see you and everyone else here on the forums again, and I'm glad you like those brooks that I posted as well.

best regards man, ~Doug

Yeah, I "feel ya"..LOL!

How are those speckled kings of yours doing?, as I recall, you had several locality types in your collection, high yellow, and white specks as well. Great stuff!. Very generally speaking, I keep seeing stuff in books about specks being somewhat more defensive than many other ssp. of getula. Is there anything to that at ALL from your years of experience with them, or is it just another very un-deserving bogus piece of info that we all often see in books from time to time. I've never owned any holbrooki myself, but with the many other countless hundreds of snakes I've owned and bred in the past, many general "blanket type" statements like the defensive one here just don't hold much water. As we both know, this all depends on many countless factors to say the least. What's your take on this in your experience with them?

Here's a fairly recent pic of one of the three sticticeps I have. this is one of the classic females, I have a very aberrant female and a slightly darker male as well. These dudes are true eating machines as you might have guest..LOL!!, I just LOVE these guys!

best regards, ~Doug

antelope Aug 06, 2009 09:52 PM

That's one sweet mama, Doug! As for the speckleds, when they come out of the egg, most are a bit more defensive, getting the attitude and staying with it, for the most part. Almost all that I have hatched show this "spitfire" attitude, but as we know, they are sooooo tiny, it is comical to say the least! What's really funny is most of the adults I find are more timid, preferring to hide their head and smear musk, lol! For a novice it may be a little unnerving, but it is definitely all show, they seem to settle as well as any of the central kings such as splendida. I don't know if it is a western thing or what, but for laid back, it has to be MBK.
I hatched 3 for 3 from a first time Calhoun county, Texas girl and they are fairly shy for specks, not the norm for me, but just goes to show, they are all individuals, and can vary from clutch to clutch. I have one more batch of Calhoun X Refugio county specks to go, in the next few weeks. let's see if I have a pic...

Glad you like the little girl sticticeps I posted, and yes, what you said about them is about exactly what I figured as well, sort of like a generalization about Hondurans, there is everything from mild to wild!, and everything in between..LOL!
The yellow in those guys you posted is just phenominal man!, really bold for sure. Thanks for your insite on them, Todd.

Adam, check out the hypo lavender pic on the corn forum, that's the male I got from Deon that successfuly bred the two locality females this year. He turned out to be quite the good fertile breeder his first time around this year.

Hey welcome back ,Were you in the penalty box or Computer failure,Thatyelow rats a smoker at least thats what we called em forty years ago.Key Biscayne had a island population of high color everglades ,i remember the tree trimmers were giving our palms hurricane trim. and a machete wielding tree trimmer flung one to the ground and i ran over and got it. needless to say it had an attitude after that but a cool find for a 10 y/o.
Now i live up in Ross Allen stomping grounds, and the yellow rats are fugly brown. ps. is that a hypo? Chris

DMong Aug 06, 2009 04:52 PM

Thanks Chris!, nice to be back for sure. I can certainly relate to your story from years ago, I have had very similar experiences like that as well from many moons ago. Actual "true" rossalleni have a tendency to have much lighter dorsal striping than their yellow rat counterparts, and sometimes they can even be basically a solid red/orange. Another key feature in detecting them in their purest form is the presence of a red tongue, as opposed to a dark one. In recent decades as their wetter "glades" habitat has been being developed and encroached upon, they have been much more prone to have been more invaded by the yellow rat form that prefers a more drained habitat. Book authors like Carl and R.D. Bartlett, as well as many other individuals all seem to agree about this too, me included.

Oh, yes, my computer crashed major many months back, and I just got a new one the other day, I sure missed being online, what a bummer!..LOL!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, and I hope to see you around at the show this year.
Here's one of the aberrant "sticticeps" I got from Howie last year,....what monster's they are becomming..LOL!

see ya, ~Doug

Joe_M Aug 06, 2009 05:22 PM

Very nice Doug. Welcome back. My daughter's "striped corn" that I let her pick out at a show a while back looks similar. It must have some rossalleni influence.

-----
Joe

DMong Aug 06, 2009 06:24 PM

Thanks Joe!,...although your daughter's corn shares several very striking similarities with the coloration of the Everglades, her corn looks to be pure. The striping trait along with other mutations make them look like there are shared traits, but thankfully for you, that doesn't seem to be the case here. Also, the striping trait and motley trait greatly reduce the head pattern "chevroning/spearpoint" and melanin darkening as well, even when the animal is normally colored, and not a hypo or albino.

Yours looks to be a nice example of pure cornsnake Joe, that should make you a bit happier,...I know it would to me..LOL! There's enough "Heinz 57" stuff floating around in the hobby to last 1000 lifetimes in my opinion..LOL!

thanks again, ~Doug

Yeah he looks pretty nice. Glad he has a good home. His mom is a wc that I really like. I've found only one any better in the last few years.
I would prefer them to have very little white on the chin as well, but I'm still workin' on that....
See ya at the show.

DMong Aug 06, 2009 06:38 PM

Yeah,....I know exactly what ya mean about the chin coloration in the rossalleni as opposed to quadrivittata. I like the fact that this dude's tongue is also solid red, as opposed to black, or even a little of both as many individuals can have(another plus). I still have that pic of it's mother that you sent me a long time ago, and even since the pic in May that I posted of him, he seems to be several stages beyond that now in nice coloration. You would flip if you saw him now at a staggering 40" long(measured him just today).

Tom Crutchfield invited me to his place in Homestead to find a sweet female mate, among several other things I'll be looking for while I'm there.

See ya at the show my friend, ~Doug
