BCC Growth rate question...

tevie84 Aug 06, 2009 09:29 PM

I know this is a noob question but I cant seem to get a clear answer from people. How long does it take for a BCC to reach sexual maturity? Males and Females? Also, how long does it take for a female to reach maximum length? I have heard of some BCC's taking up to 5-7 years to get the maximum size. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sexual maturity minimum for males is probably around 2.5 years. You're more than likely going to get better results at 3.5 years.
Females can reach sexual maturity as early as 4-4.5 years, but again, better results will probably be obtained at 5-5.5 years.
For females, sexual maturity is CLOSELY DEPENDENT on mature muscle mass and age, not size.
As for how long til they reach maximum length, technically the reach the maximum length the day they die. From what I understand, they literally grow just a little each year. Fractions of an inch, to an inch or so. But how long til they reach the majority of their maximum length is different for all animals. PROBABLY between 5-8 years.

just my opinions anyway...

Thanks for the answers. I understand that many boids will continue to grow at a very small rate as adults but are those stories of BCC's getting 12' plus and 50 lbs plus true?

Those are VERY rare cases. In general, an 8 footer is about the biggest you'll see, especially in the Guyana shield animals. The amazon basins (Peruvians are the most commonly known) tend to be slightly larger of the two.

My BCC is 12 years old and 7 feet long. She's been eating one 3 1/2 pound rabbit, every 2 weeks, for the last 5 years. She's only grown 12 inches in the last 5 years. I managed to get her to take a 5 pound rabbit once, but then she went off feed for about 2 months. I figure it's better to stick to the 3 1/2 pound rabbits for her. I tend to worry if my snakes refuse food.

So, BCC's can grow very slowly. I'm still hoping my girl will reach the 8 foot mark. If she doesn't, I won't worry about it.

Oh I see. Is that common for BCC's to grow that slow? Is she cbb? To me that sounds like a internal parasites or something if you are feeding rabbits and still no considerable growth. I dont know that is just my concern. That is very interesting though. I would imagine that male BCC's stay a little smaller for a long time as well. Maybe you have a male. Thanks for the response.

I only have the 1 BCC and she's a captive bred girl. Since I only have her, I can't compare her growth to any others. Yes, she's definately a girl. She's been checked for parasites. That was one of my concerns, when she wasn't growing very fast. The results came back clean, no internal parasites. She's a very healty active girl. She just doesn't grow very fast. She's still growing, but very slowly.
