Never gets old....

krhodes Aug 06, 2009 11:53 PM

This is the first Western hognose morph that was ever proven. Though the bloodline has had its issues, I never get tired of looking at a nice pink pastel. It is very unfortunate that the second wild-collected pink pastel line never was able to get off the ground. It would have been nice to cross the lines had they been compatible. They were found less than 15 miles from one another a few years apart.

Wow! Is the color correct on that one? It seriously looks a lot like a Snow being that light colored. Totally different than my pair of Pink Pastels:

(Male on left, Female on right)

That's also an interesting history lesson as I did not know that PPA's were the first Western Hognose morph produced in captivity. Was it Richard Evans that found the original WC specimens or did he buy them off of someone who found them? What exactly are the problems with the line? I know it's been said that the reason there are not too many is because they tend to have problems, but what kind of problems specifically?

I bred my male to 2 normal females this year as my female has been a very picky eater and thus a slow growing snake. But at least now I have 2 new blood lines of 8.7 100% hets that I'll probably keep the majority of just to work with. I'm just happy that my male PPA is now a proven breeder.

Yes the color is correct. She is by far the nicest I have ever seen. She was a slow starter, but has taken off quite well.

Richard Evans purchased the snake from a local kid. When the snake came in, as his employees recall, the snake was covered in a thin layer of mud and they could not tell that it was a pink. He compensated the same kid when he returned with another hognose sometime later.
Richard produced the first pinks in the early 1990's. Within just a few short years another different albino(orange) was found 70 miles north from where the first(pink) was found.
As time passed, late 1999, another albino was rumored to exist in a school science teachers' classroom. The rumor proved true(a second pastel pink) and attempts were made to purchase this snake. The teacher would not sell. Finally, the teacher was ready to sell the snake in 2004. It died the next year and never sired a clutch.
At the beginning every attempt was made to produce these pink morphs and it was believed that inbreeding had taken place to one degree or another. Standard inbreeding problems would be noticed such as neurological, mobility, and equilibrium issues. Other issues would also be suspected such as reproduction complications. As breeders recognized the beauty and potential, outcrossing would take place. Now, I believe there are stronger pastels out there than there were ten years ago.

I especially like your pastel you call berry. The purple faces are incredible.

Second paragraph first line should read "purchased the first pink pastel" instead of purchased the snake.

Keven I am the one who washed the mud off the snake he paid 50 for it Richard was not in at the time.No other compinsation was given.WHAT A DEAL.Yet richard worked very hard producing hognose morphs and diserves all the credit for bringing this species into the spotlight way to go.
