poop problems?

geckoGirlsMom Sep 15, 2003 09:11 PM

(Trying again because I didn't get any response... got lost in the shuffle)
My daughter's leo (we've had for 5 weeks now) has taken to pooping only about every 48 hours, instead of about every 24 hours like she was initially. Her poops seem a lot smaller than those of geckos at the pet store which are about her size. She's about 5 inches I think (not counting her tail.) She seems otherwise really healthy, eats daily about 5 crix and a few mealworms... getting chubbier in body and tail by the day. Her poops are part white chalky stuff and part, well, poop. That's normal right? The poop part seems to be getting smaller though. She is on paper towels now, but she was on sand before. The person from whom we got her had her on sand and she was so loving digging in it, we left her on it for a bit. But I began to be worried about impaction so I got rid of the sand. I'm worried she might have some kind of impaction problem that is making her constipated - doing smaller doos with more time in between. Also, when she goes, a fair amount of liquid comes out along with the poop. Is this normal? Well, this is an awfully pleasant topic. Hopefully nobody is eating while reading.
Any suggestions?

I'm no expert but heres my opinion anyways Well I know in humans if there is an impaction, sometimes the um poop will leak around it causing small amounts of diarrhea like poop. From what i know, normal gecko poop is sort of bird like with a darker poop part and the little white spot on top, not diarrhea although somewhat moist is okay i think. Since there is no way to reliably check for this in geckos the best thing to do would be to monitor the geckos appetite and any other possible signs of illness. Maybe someone else can add to this, HTH.

thanks for your thoughts. She looks otherwise healthy so I think I'll try to be less paranoid.

As long as your gecko is eating and pooping it should be fine. How long has it been off the sand. If more than 2 weeks I wouldn't worry. Keep the floor temp around 90 degrees to help digestion and things will be fine. Not every gecko poops everyday. Hope this makes you feel better, Jeremy.

I'll make sure the floor temps not too low...
She's been off sand for about a week. Thanks for your thoughts.

sounds fine, probally pooping less sand out too. They do this from time to time. May be digesting much better now also leaving less waste. The white part is just fine it is the urate (pee). Leaving a little juice with the poo is good in that your leo is well hydrated. Sounds like your doing very good as long as your temps are ok.
