Texas Herping

texasviper619 Aug 08, 2009 05:01 PM

There seems to be no activity here in central Texas, its difficult to find anything even turning over every rock and rotting log I find. How frustrating! Is anyone in Texas getting any action?? This heat and drought better break soon or I'm gonna lose it.

It's horrible.

I haven't been out much here in Austin, but I do the local rescue/relocation in my community, and they really are foraging this summer!

I've been here for 3 years this summer and haven't been able to find a copperhead to save my life, and got 2 in 2 days this summer- one in the community pool, and the other on a lady's front yard, next to a sprinkler head.

We need rain, BAD.

Please tell me you put the rocks and logs back, otherwise you won't find them this fall there either! Just a reminder, not saying you trash. If it is any consolation, we got zip down south as well, hottest, driest, season yet.

Oh yeah, I leave everything the way I found it, there are very few places to go herping here in central Texas and I dont want to mess up my favorite places. Im crossing my fingers for a good light rain on a warm humid night, waiting for things to get moving. Wonder how east Texas is doing?

East texas isn't so bad. We've gotten a little rain recently but we had an extremely long dry spell as well. I've seen enough snakes though. I'll post some pics sometime when I get around to it. Plenty of ribbons, several rats, numerous copperheads, couple cottonmouths, and lots of nerodia as usual. Some racers but numbers less during worst part of drought. I was in San Antonio recently and found plenty of nerodia around a water source but far fewer ribbons than normal there and I imagine the woodland snakes are about zilch in central TX.

Todd,

Finally getting a bit of action. Well, Texas garter, a water snake, several red-eared sliders.
Today was slow, only a couple of swifts ( Southern Prairie?? lizards) in herps. Did see a bobcat with a cub though!
Too bad my camera is still jammed from my last caving expedition. May have to get a new one.

Yeah, you guys are still in the heat/drought aren't you? At least the 100 plus days seem over here. Still a bit drier than I would like.
Heck, I wish I was going back to New Mexico where it has been cooler & wetter than my corner of Texas.

Good luck Todd!
I added two Texas Spiny lizards & a ground skink. Nothing new, but nice to see ANY herps this summer! ( as you know..)
