RARE EPICRATES BREEDING

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Aug 10, 2009 07:00 AM

Here's a few pics of two litters of Fords Boas and a litter of baby Vine Boas born so far this year. These are extremely rare here in the U.S. and it's even rarer to see a captive breeding of them. Baby E. gracilis are bright orange at birth and then go thru an octogenetic color change as many other snakes do...thanks for looking

Unlike many folks my interest vary and most importantly I know how to keep and breed ALL kinds of herps. We breed Boids, Crotalids, Elapids, Chelonians [turtles and tortoises], Iguanids, and Varanids. At present we are not working with any crocodilians but I'm soon going to be and have bred and hatched 11 different species in the past. It's very rewarding to me to produce a lg variety of herps and makes since from a business standpoint as well. During hatching season it's almost like Christmas....lol

Cuban crocs, fabulous animals. Wish I was a bit further south and I would join you with some cyclura and crocs. I hear cuban crocs aren't the most suited to a newbie croc keeper though???

UPS messed up the T&C shipment and they are getting re-routed from Phillie. It's actually pretty cool here today so temps shouldn't be a problem.

Cuban Crocs happen to be one of my favorites and over a 5 year period I hatched over 450 babies in the 1990's. In fact I hatched more single handedly than every Zoo in N. America and Europe had combined since they became record keepers over the last 25 years. With crocs it's all about 3 things, diet, diet, and diet. With Cubans YOU MUST FEED WHOLE MAMMALS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE HIGH FERTILITY RATES ON THE EGGS. Every species of croc is a little different in dietary needs BUT over a 12 year period I learned enough to successfully produce 11 different species. To date I don't think anyone has ever matched that number....

Seeing those gracilis and chrysogaster remind me of the early 80s when they were still commonly available on price lists. I remember seeing gracilis on someone's list for $45 each and thinking "Hmm...I'd like to try those some day" but didn't have patience for lizard/frog eating babies.

I figured they would be cheap and available forever. Boy was I wrong!
