Paper substrate?

kaydee Aug 10, 2009 02:36 PM

Right now I use aspen for my Western Hognose however after one of my Boa Constrictors got a mouth full last night while eating I am switching all my Boas to kitchen roll (paper towel) very soon. Does any one use paper for Western Hognose? I know they love to burrow.

It seems kind of sad to not let them burrow. I've read somewhere about using shredded recycled newspaper, although I'm not sure how great that would be to use versus aspen or healthy pet.

What do you use?

I don't have a hognose yet (planning on picking one up at the daytona expo), but I've read up on a lot and it seems like healthy pet is the best, it's not as dusty as carefresh from what I've read, and not as sharp as aspen.
If I'm wrong, please someone, feel free to correct me.

I use several layers of newspaper and they burrow under all that just fine. It is cheap and easy to clean up also.

I've been using rabbit pellets almost exclusively for reptiles for 16 some years. They work exceeding well for my Westerns as well as my kingsnakes. But I don't use them for snakes that require a bit more humidity such as my balls or mandarin rats. I wrote a thread on it here: Rabbit Pellets. The alternative substrate?
