First clutch of 2009

robhaneisen Aug 10, 2009 03:05 PM

This is actually a little early for me. Clutch of seven albinos - including a couple real nice tangerines - hatched out last night and this morning. One more egg to hatch out in this clutch. Laid on June 5, hatch on Aug. 10. Both parents are tangerine albinos but there's some variability in the clutch so far.

This is my favorite time of year!

Great looking youngsters!
Hey, where did you get the course grain vermiculite?. All I can ever come across anymore is the fine, so I like to add about a third of Perlite to allow a little more airation to the mix.

best regards, ~Doug

Big Apple Herp Supply in New York. It's kinda pricey but I guess that's why they call it their "glitter grade" vermiculite.

Congrats Rob, those are nice looking. I am waiting on a hondo clutch that was laid 6/7 so it could be any day now.

Very nice... how are those gaigeae eggs doing? I recall you had one clutch in particular that you thought might not make it... hope that turned out OK.

Hey Nate:

The first clutch of 12 Gaigae eggs are doing great. The problem clutch that the female laid 27 days post shed is iffy. Of the seven eggs, I'd say two or three are definitely going bad (some leakage and they smell bad) but a couple of the others look solid for now. We'll see. How's yours coming?

Bummer about the late clutch... think you're going to try again with that female next year? Mine are looking great, no bad eggs, not even any ugly ones this year. My main concern, now that we're finally getting some seasonable weather, is keeping them in the low 80's through the "dog days" of August... might have to run home on my lunch break today and double-check the thermostat. My incubator is a 10 gallon aquarium with a plexiglass cover, about 2 or 3 gallons of water with a submersible heater it it, and a couple bricks that hold up a Sterilite shoebox with a bit of perlite, the eggs, and a thermometer probe. The high specific heat of the water keeps the temperature pretty stable, but on very hot days I find that I sometimes need to manually turn the heater down a notch or two. Just a few more weeks, though! Fingers crossed that they'll be ready by the first weekend of October, otherwise I'm really going to have my hands full for the following six months...

Nate:

You could always try letting them incubate at room temperature. I incubate all my eggs around 78-79 and my reptile room during warm weather is about 75 degees. Letting them get closer to 75 is a lot better than closer to 85.

My first clutch of black milks should hatch about 7-10 days before the October show.

I'm not sure what I'll do with that female who laid so late. I have an alternate nest box idea that uses a large clay pot. It will be darker. Maybe that is the issue with her. either that or I'll retire her even though she is only 9 years old.

Those things are smokin', Rob! Such bright little beauties.

I got your e-mail, but haven't the chance to peruse it, yet.

Thanks Cole. The last one out is real nice too and has some aberrancy.

I have a bunch more due to hatch - some might be nicer. Plus this clutch pictured is from the same pairing that doubled clutched last last week with five more good eggs.
