Of rolled eggs & roll outs...

4ktung Aug 10, 2009 05:55 PM

...be patient. At least that was my experience this year. Our pastel female laid her first clutch a couple of months ago and it couldn't have gone much worse. When I opened her tub that morning she had "rolled-out" one of her eggs and decided not to coil around it. I know a lot of times those rolled out eggs are doomed from the start. Then as I gently removed her from the remaining eggs, they proceeded to roll apart like a bunch of marbles. Having no clue as to which side was up anymore, I placed them in their container and into the incubator. Sixty days later, all 5 eggs hatched happy and healthy, including our first pewter. Not that every story is a successful one, just don't give up on them too quickly.

Don't go looking for snakes--you might find them.

It doesn't matter which side is up until a day or two after the egg has been laid. That is when the embryo attaches itself to the top of the yolk. I have never believed that rolled out eggs were bad or done on purpose, I think it is accidental.

One of my females laid nine eggs, when I went to chek one of the eggs rolled out. I put it back in and she pushed it out again. later the same day I went to transfer the eggs to the incubator and qhen I removed her the eggs rolled in all directions. I picked them and put them all in the incubator. One of the eggs proved infertile, maybe the one she pushed out originally. The others are still doing fine.
