How closely related is the western, eastern, giant, speckled, and tri color?

rudedogsurfrat Sep 15, 2003 10:34 PM

I must admit I am quite ignorant of non-domestic hognoses. The Easterns and Westerns look alike but the Madagascans kind of look like a different snake. And the tri-color in my opinion doesn't even look like a hognose. Are they in the same family? Do they act the same?

Just curious

From what I've gathered, the tricolor hogs aren't closely related, and the giant hogs are even less closely related.

But they ARE hognoses?
Are they toad eaters?

Confusing

Any colubrid with an upturned snout gets called a hognose. It's like all the different and not closely related ratsnakes, it's just a name. I think that both tris and giants DO eat toads, but that's more of a 'convergence' thing, where snakes are similar because they have similar lifestyles, not because they're related. Look at the coral cobra (Aspidelaps), which has a similar lifestyle to the hognose, and looks almost the same as one (except for the hood), but is definately not closely related. Also night adders (Causus) fall into this category.
According to what I've read, Heterodon really doesn't have any close relatives.
