Black pines

viandy Aug 12, 2009 09:31 PM

Took a couple of pictures while cleaning tonight. This is a pair of black pines I got from Russ Pascatore last year. I knew they'd be nice ones, you can see they are -
male

Didn't just clean the cages, these got moved up to a larger tub
female

They're close to 4' now, the 15qt boxes were getting pretty full.
Here's a picture from a few months ago of one with a KJ red bull.

These are great animals, I really enjoy having them.

They look very nice indeed. Which female dammed them? I know he has a couple of them, correct? And, yeah... it looks like they've definitely outgrown the 15 qt bins lol...

nice contrast image with the beautiful KJ red Bull! All ten of my little lodingi hatchlings ate rat pinks for their first meal on Monday! They are monsters right out of the egg!

My female was hatched in 1993 so I am going to hold back a pair this year just in case I want to retire her. I am really excited about raising up a pair of the little buggers again!

Those are really beautiful; black pines are one of the coolest snakes in North America. I bet less than a couple hundred people have ever seen black pines in the wild.
I recently bought a pair of 09's from Jim Keenan. Already eating small adult mice/rat fuzzies. Ever wonder why black pines are not more popular? It seems they have small clutches. I have also heard ratios are skewed towards males and that females are tougher to find.
Anyway, nice snakes!

Those are really gorgeous. And I agree, the contrast with the awesome red is really cool.

BTW, there is a great account on Black Pines in the book "Reptiles and Amphibians of the Southern Pine Woods" by Steven Reichling. I think I got all that right I just finished reading it and it was very interesting. Learned a lot about black pines and Louisiana pines as well.

Neat snakes.

Yeah, I just read the same account. Great little book with excellent information on black pines, LA pines and southern pines. According to Reichling, black pines were always probably rare, but now they are extremely rare due to loss of pine flatwoods habitat. Pretty much restricted to a handful of counties in southeastern Mississippi. In my opinion, black pines are much rarer than, say, eastern indigos. Frankly, it amazes me that black pines can now be purchased for around a hundred bucks or so.

Those are some of the blackest Black Pines I've ever seen. Love their even color. Those are beauties.

simply gorgeous! There are probably more black pines in captivity than in the wild.

Dang, would you stop posting pics of that b&w, it's giving me sleepless nights.

tortlemon Aug 16, 2009 09:56 AM

HOLY COW, Andy! Those babies are huge, and beautiful! That was my first year breeding those so I am glad to see they became so black, in just a year, after hatching out with so much light pattern. With the parents being as black as they are I was pretty sure they would turn out nice. I should send you my holdbacks to pump up like that!
