Growth Potential of V. niloticus.

sidbarvin Aug 12, 2009 10:51 PM

If you give them a good setup with lots of space they will look like this before you know it. At three years of age these two males are still growing pretty steadily.

This one being the larger of the two is over seven feet and weighs roughly 35 lbs.

Nice post Sid,

It is good that you show the potential of these animals as hopefully it will provide more insight for people curious of what they may be getting into.

Also, it is good to see that you show, all Niles arn't readilly nasty animals. They adapt according to the way you raise them and according to how you support them.

Cheers,
Mike.

Awesome post Roger. You have raised some spectacular animals! My little guy is doing better, calming down more every day even with some handling. I am being extra careful not to restrain him when handled. I sat with him in the tub -no water- for about an hour and he did well. He is starting to get used to my hands and how a human moves. I gently rubbed his back, would show him my hand then touch his throat and he just constantly studied me but without the crazed scared out of his mind look. I realize that befriending a human goes against everything that these little guys were 'pre-programmed' to do/know. But that doesn't mean it's impossible! Cheers mate.

How do you keep them from fighting with each other?

They have the use of plenty of resources such as multiple basking sites, water pans and hides throughout their enclosure. Also, the enclosure is quite large. Each knows his place, one being very dominant, the other submissive. Each has long established his own territory.

So the key is space and plenty of hiding spots and basking spots.
