Medication help

lexxxx300 Aug 13, 2009 11:12 AM

I know that I should take my water monitor to a vet but I can't afford to right now. He eats every once in a while and is losing weight fast. He is a beautiful banded water monitor with a really calm disposition. I'm sure he has worms or parasites. Is there some medication I can give him like panacour or something and if so how much and how often. He is roughly 18". I have offered him everything and again he is losing weight. I'm really concerned he may die. Please help.

Alex

Why don't you tell us about your setup, it is likely as a result of that, that any bugs may be having an effect on the lizard.

Be very detailed.

Cheers,
Mike.

Mike is right, but there is also something else to think about. If you can not afford a vet. That is, it will be unbeliveably expensive to raise your monitor You might want to reconsider and re-home it.

Thanks for the help but I'm very experienced in monitors. You can go to cybersalvators and see my 6ftr and my 4 ftr that I raised from hatchling. I'm having trouble with my baby. So if anyone ELSE can help me with medications I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

proexotics.com sells a book with that info. I cant remember what its called but they only sell a couple books.

Undertanding Reptile Parasites by Doc Klingenburg. Excellent book, everyone should have it as a reference. And inexpensive to boot.

Alex, you are probably looking for Flagyl/Panacur/Droncit, but better to get a fecal done and not just shotgun away. Flagyl and Panacur can sometimes be obtained through horse and tack supply stores. Droncit is for tapeworms, but typically only comes through a vet.

But I strongly suggest getting the book and reading the info and getting your doses from there.

Best of luck!

It's impactical to tell every person who has a question to see a vet. With what is charged for a vet bill(or a docter visit for that matter) most of us can't afford it unless it's a medical emergency. I'm a hobby herper not a breeder. I can't afford a couple hundred bucks every time one of my animals is acting "funny" and i'm sure most the rest of these guys can't either. You shouldn't judge so harshly. It would be a lonely hobby if only the rich participated.
