Just a lil Rant

jcs_colubrids Aug 13, 2009 02:04 PM

You know Im always up for new people to join the keeping of reptiles or any pet for that matter. What im tired of is people doing it on a whim, and not doing there research before there purchase. In todays world there are way too many ways to do research about an animal before it comes home, and often too many people are getting an animal and saying, "now what do i do?". Snakes are really easy to care for if you just research and stabilize temps before you bring them home. There needs for a clean and temp controlled environment are crucial, yet easy to achieve with some practice before the pet should arrive home. Well I guess thats all i have to say for now. Sorry to anyone i annoy with this, but its just me thinking outloud.

yes, it is sad that people tend to ump in without looking, but It's a general human failing. Unfortunately when pets are involved, other lives are affected. I think this is a problem that all pet hobbies face, but how many shelters do you know that take reptiles? Let's just say that the reptile community should work on PR, and get education out in vet offices and pet shops so that this doesn't happen to more herps!

All these animals are going to die sonner or later in captivity. Most are , unfortunatly, sooner.

The best one can do to preserve whatever their "pet peaves" are is to breed reptiles.

If you want a pet. Get a dog or a cat. If snakes interest you beyond the initial cool factor (which will wear off)and you think they are beatiful..then great. Get some and try and do what is right for the snake and not what YOU think is best. In other words learn something about their ecology, natural environment. Read up on snake keeping. Hey with the internet you can what BHB Enteprises on Youtube and see professional snake keepers take care of the snakes.

Anyone got that name on Youtube? Snake TV or something like that> Brian Barzyck hosts it.

I know what you are saying,,,I read up alot before I got my first snake to make sure I could handle all that it would need.
I see so many people at pet stores,etc...getting a reptile and then at the register asking how to take care of it. I guess they think they are like cats and dogs,,,but even certain breeds of them need specific things. I only have been keeping for 8 years,,and I am still learning things all the time.Like now is the first timeI have motes,,,so learing more.

Oh yes ive been into reptiles for almost 20 years, and I still learn things. Im always learning. there will always be some sort of problem that one will encounter. this forum is a good place for those questions. its just that we as people have a responsibility for our pets. We must meet the animals requirements for safe and happy living. I have over 60 snakes in my collection, and every single one is a pet and has a name. I spend quite a bit of time and money to make sure they have the proper care and husbandry. I love giving tours to the kids down the block, or to the old man next door thats just curious. Information given is great, but only if someone is going to listen and apply the knowledge. but anyways i hope everyone has a good day.

Amen to your rant!
I've heard people tell me that they were going to get a snake because of other things, 'they are low maintenance.' I hate it when I hear that because what I am hearing is 'I'm going to get a snake because if I neglect it it won't matter'.

If someone wants a low maintenance pet, get a chia!
