How heavy can Cyclura's get?

august9 Aug 13, 2009 03:16 PM

I used to own a male and female rhino iguana. The maile was about 20 lbs and 4' long. However, after seeing the Rhino at the Houston Zoo in person, it is a monster. I am just curious to how big these really get? Please see link below:

Do other Cyclura get this large?

Thank you.

Hard to say the size from that picture. Biggest cornuta I ever saw was on Isla Cabritos. Huge, bigger than any rhino I have seen in captivity. I agree with Tom on a previous post that the Andros cyclura get bigger than rhinos. Figs get really large too, they are closely related to the Andros'. Billy, a lewisi, on GC was bigger than 4' 20lbs. So, 4 and 20 is a big lizard but they do get bigger but no too much. Captive size in iguanas is a lot like fish stories in my experience.

Thanks for the info! I am not sure, but I would think the Rhino at the Houston Zoo is about 5' long and at least 30-40 pounds. I just remember staring at it in awe as to how big it was!

If it's that big I've NEVER seen any Cyclura that size and I've seen a LOT of them. My largest is just under 4' and weighs about 21 lbs and Fred's a bigun...That's Fred in Al's lap and my girlfriend Patty giving him a treat...

How big do you think C. ricordi get? I bred them several years back in the day but mine were not even 3' long. In the DR other than at ZOODOM I haven't seen any Ricord's that are more than 3' long. On Isla Cabritas the Ricords I'm told get larger so if this is factual I'm interested in maximum size.Thank you in advance...

Thats about right, 3'. The male at Zoodom is about there. The ones off exhibit are smaller than he. I caught 3 in Cabritos and one on the mainland, maybe the biggest was 3'. I would have to check my notes. The biggest I saw (below) didnt have a full tail. hard to judge. They are gorgeous

I've never seen one as big as the one in your hands [in bulk anyway]. I wish I had NEVER got rid of mine. The babies are STUNNING....

my male is a beast and he is only 47 inches tip to tip and 24 lbs. i did see a female once that was 50 inches but id not have big male bulk and was only 20 lbs.

You are probably right...It may not have been as big as I remember. I miss my Rhino igs.

Interesting. My male is 50 inches and have no idea what he weighs or how I could correctly weigh him. I do know that he is having trouble climbing in and out of the cat door as of late - lol!

Mark, which male? The 87%+ 'lewisi' one, or the caymenensis...? Do you have a pic of this guy in in your lap or something, anything that would show the perspective on how big your biggest guy is?

Mark M Aug 19, 2009 11:22 PM

No, I'm talking about my male rhino.

Here is a big rhino I saw on Cabritos in 04, I assumed he was a twenty or so pounder. The video didn't like to be compressed, the full res was nice.

Would like to think bigger than 3', but then we are getting into the fish stories. Ricords are beautiful iguanas.

cycluracornuta Aug 20, 2009 03:55 AM

A really big unhealthly obease rhino iguana might weigh 30lbs. Most of the totally huge monsters when put on an honest scale will hover around 20lbs. The one in your link has a very short tail...often caused by a life in captivity in a very dry climate.
The one being held was about 20lbs. The one on the ground was the largest in the main exhibit at ZooDom, DR. It is not a very impressive photo, but looks are deceiving, I will guess 28lbs. Rhino Iguanas seem to be the heaviest bodied of the cyclura species.

This is Gitmo, been with me for over 15 years - been in a lot of mags, tv, etc. He now weighs 8.8 kg.

Not sure if they allow links here, hopefully it worked

cycluracornuta Aug 26, 2009 05:22 PM

Darn, the link did not work for me. The idea of seeing a monsterously huge Cuban iguana does bring one thought to mind.

Like fish, Iguanas have varied densities...ie a 10lb green iguana might look as big as a 15lb cuban. The Cuban in the picture below was just under 8lbs and was bigger than a 10lb rhino iguana I had at the same time. So, if the question were changed to which is the biggest cyclura, I would lean more towards choosing a large male nubila at 20 something pounds.
