Patchy dry skin

ladyball Sep 15, 2003 11:32 PM

I have a problem. My female has dry patchy skin. She has drop spots on her head, he skin is all dry, and very rough.
The humidity in the tank is 50-60%. It could be higher I know, but until she got out with Rachel last week, she was fine. Now the male is getting it too. I only have the three balls, so the didn't get anything from strange snakes I brought in.
I have soaked her, and she seems to be getting ready for another shed, but I am very worried about her problem. I have a large bowl of water for them to swim in voluntarily. She is also eating fine so far and seems active.
The only other thing that has happened, is that my heating pad seems to have been unplugged for a couple of days before I noticed it was off.
Cold her condition be from getting to cold? I am checking the pad several times a day so that it doesn't stay unplugged again.
Can someone help me?

...from what I can gather from your info this isn't retained skin from a shed. What I can tell you is that when BP have skin problems they shed often as part of the healing process. Still feeding is obviously a good sign. You might want to try Neosporin ointment or povidone-iodine (Betadine) ointment just in case there's any bacterial involvment. Scott J. Michaels DVM

No it is NOT a retained shed. HOWEVER, I have raised the temperature of the heat source. She seems MUCH better after two days of a warmer enclosure.
I just checked her and while she still feels dry and rough, the skin is looking better visually. I will keep an eye on her, and if the skin is not normal after this next shed I will take her to the vets.
Would a Betadine soak be advantageous? I mean, would it hurt if it wasn't needed?
Thank you for answering my questions. There seems to be a lot of discussion on other subjects, but we still need important questions answered too! :0)
