Brazilian Rainbow Boa Litter

Jeff Clark Aug 14, 2009 11:24 AM

My first BRB litter of the year was born this morning. The mother of the litter is RD and the father is Caat99M1. RD had laid about half the litter when I discovered her. She laid the remainder of the litter in less than 10 minutes. There were 24 healthy babies, one stillborn and 5 or more slugs. She was munching down slugs while she was laying the litter. RD was looking very large but did not look ready until just a few days ago when I put a nesting box in her cage. Today is 126 days after post ovulation shed. She had started looking and acting gravid 2 weeks before the post ovulation shed. She is too large and heavy to palpate individual babies so I had no idea about exactly how many there would be. I did expect a total of 25 to 35 based upon her large size and bulk. I was only able to detect fetal heart tones with the Doppler FHT monitor in the last 6 weeks.

congrats on the stink ball of goo. Cant wait to see individual pics I have three boa breedings i am trying this year so hopefully i can finally enjoy the horrid smell of the boa goo lol

Jeff Clark Aug 14, 2009 03:57 PM

Tim,
...That goo is the slipperiest substance ever but it does not have a noticeable odor. Perhaps an evolutionary adaptation so that the new babies do not attract predators.

Thanks,

...All 24 of them ate before they were 7 hours old. All were offered live pinky rats. 18 ate them. The other 6 ate live hopper mice. I love new babies.

Some litters yes and some litters no. I like to get them eating and growing right away as that seems to set a pattern for them. Good eaters usually stay good eaters and conversely the picky eaters stay that way for years. I do not know why but it seems one litter will be born biting and striking at everything that moves and another litter will be born totally tame and calm. Whether they are biters or calm seems to not make any difference in whether they will eat right off. This litter was all calm and then ate right away. So much we do not know about these animals.
