imitators 1st clutch

jbeetle Sep 15, 2003 11:49 PM

ok, so my imitators just laid their 1st clutch! i am really excited, but not too sure what to do? should i remove the eggs, and if so how do i get them off the bromeliad leaf? or should i leave them to be raised by the frogs? also, if i remove them, do i need to keep each tad in seperate containers, or would a big enough body of water be okay for the couple tads to grow up together (worried about canibalism/growth inhibitors)? sorry for all the questions, i just want to make sure i do things right. thanks in advance

I would normally remove the eggs, but it is completely up to you. I used a dull knife to scrape them off the leaves, and into a deli cup. From there I float them on a lid just like any other egg until they hatch. If you only have a few tads going, raise them individually. I had 100 some imitator going before I would raise them communially. I had one that lost its feet from being nibbled on, but the rest were fine communially if it's a low number with a lot of visual barriers and food. I'm not saying it's a good method, but it can work. However, for your case, raise them individually. Best of luck with them, they're one of my favorite frogs.
Best,
Justin

Very cool, I'm hoping to get a pair some how. If the ones I have now are males, then I will have to come up with a female... They are very cool, mine still hide a lot.

It's really fun to watch them raise their own at least once. It's just a great show. It depends upon whether you want more production right away, though.
