Sexing dragons

ecrowell Aug 15, 2009 01:31 PM

How accurate can sexing a dragon at under 2 months old be, how do they do this, and is it safe? What is the pink or blue spot on the backs that is used to show the sex, and is it safe? Thanks, Ed

Under 2 months most dragons are still less than 8-9 inches and some breeders can give a pretty accurate determination but they may also say "probable"[because they're not positive] if they think it's a female...there is a picture of a female's vent if you scroll down about half way to the topic"male/female" that was posted a little while ago.The dragon is 11" but it would look similar on a smaller dragon...but again,it can be a very good guess that occasionally is incorrect.

Oh,I meant to mention in my other reply, you can arch the tail back gently.it's safe, and many times even in a small male you will see[right above the vent]instead of a smooth or rounded little mound there will be what look like the impression of 2 tiny toothpicks under the skin. That's the way I would describe it...hope that helps...as for the marking pink blue...I don't mark mine so someone else can answer that for you.

I agree with everything angie said on how to sex juveniles. Females tend to have a bump after their vent and males tend to have a divit with 2 bulges on either side when you lift up the tail. The blue you see on the tails is more than likely sharpie or some other non-toxic marker. Which is safe to use on them it just comes off when they shed. Just becareful to keep track off them before they shed or you won't know who is who.
