Question to vendors at reptile shows

novicekeeper Aug 15, 2009 11:22 PM

I've been reading up on getting some type of merchant account to be able to accept credit/debit cards at shows but have run into one problem I can't seem to get away from. The monthly fee for having the merchant account. Do you guys pay the merchant fees year round but only attend a few shows a year? is that really worth it? It doesn't seem right to me to pay 20-30 bucks a month to have an account, but only accept payment twice a year. Who do you guys use for merchant accounts? Better fees and rates? Any info is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

I simply take my laptop and use PayPal. Also, if you have an iPhone, there is an app for taking credit card payments. I have not used it, and know nothing about any poss. fees, but Iknow it exists.

Good luck.

Hello, You can have all the equipment you need to run credit or debit cards, but unless you have a processing company you won't be able to make any electronic transactions. I've been doing this for twenty years and the rates the companies charge do not fluctuate very much. IMO it really depends on how much you make in the one to two shows you do a year. It might be worth it if your making more than $2000 a year doing a few shows. Hope this helps. Andrew
