ReptiSun 10.0 brings new life to old guy

Esther Aug 16, 2009 03:32 PM

I bought the ZooMed ReptiSun 10.0 fluorescent tube when I re-did my Yarrows spiny terrarium. One of the residents is an old fella I've had for like 6 years at least, and he was wc, so no telling how old he really is. For several years, although I had the ReptiSun 5.0 bulb over his tank, he would develop swollen eyes at times and I'd have to hand feed him until he recovered. This was despite dusting his crickets, gutloading them, etc. I really thought he wouldn't last the year.

I obtained a new young 1.1 pair of Yarrows, thinking I would be losing this old male and wanting a pair. That was until the magic of the ReptiSun 10.0 took effect! No more episodes of swollen eyes. He is definitely "the boss" of the tank; the young male stays out of his way, they do not fight. He lustily courts the young female, almost vibrating himself right off the rock ledge while she studies on his courting technique. So far, she has politely refused his advances.

What a difference a light can make! I am very happy to see all the residents of this terrarium in such fine fettle, glowing with beautiful colors.

Good job, and I believe it. I read a more recent book dealing with, among other things, the effects of sunlight on vitamin D production in basking reptiles. In a nutshell, sunlight is crucial for certain behaviors and abilities as we all know. Vitamin additives, while somewhat effective, are no match for sunlight, or a suitable UVA and UVB source.
