I apologize for implying you might not) but do you have a digital thermometer to check the temps under that 150W bulb?
I'd hate for you to burn your buddy. A 150W spot on top of a 40gal. might get pretty hot unless you keep him down low, or the light up high.
the size of the tank itself won't cause any growth. However, you should be keeping a adult bearded dragon in at least a 55 gal tank. 40 gal is fine till the dragon reaches it's first year, but after that, it should be in a larger tank.
What does make a dragon grow is proper care. Make sure it's basking temperature is between 95F-110F (higher end for younger dragons, under 8 months old). Make sure there is also a UVB producing light over the cage. It's fed crickets 2-3 times a day for babies (to about 4 months old), 2 feedings for 4-8 months old, 1 feeding 8-12 months old. Once they reach adult age, insects 2-3 times a week should be fine. Dust crickets at least every other day for 4-8th month dragons, once every day for younger dragons. Adults are fine with 2 dustings a week.
At all times, mixed greens should be offered (collard, dandelion, mustard greens, enchive, escaroli should be stables). Even if babies don't eat the greens, still over it all day long. Eventually the dragon will eat the greens.
I have to disagree on the part about the 40 gal and the 55 gal tanks, I might be wrong, but I had 2 of them, and I really think that the 40 gal breeders give them more room to move around, (with a lot of playtime outsdie of the tank) a 55 gal is long but not really enough room in there to roam around, the 40 gal breeders are shorter, but a lot wider and a lot more roaming room...I agree with everyone a bigge tank isn't going t make him grow any faster, a lot of good food, and fresh water should do that trick
good luck
