Concan, TX snake ID

sfbowers Aug 16, 2009 09:20 PM

Can anyone ID this snake? I saw it last weekend in Concan, TX (about 80 miles west of San Antonio, TX) when I was visiting the Mexican free-tailed bats at Frio Cave. I watched him capture and devour two bats during the two hours I was there (one of them he caught as it flew by). He was thin, whip-like, and maybe 2-3 feet long (and very, very fast).

In case you want it, the scientific name for the desert striped is Masticophis t. taeniatus.

I agree that is interesting behavior. I have heard of & seen photos of ratsnakes eating bats like that.

If you are picky about common names, that race is called the Central Texas Whipsnake (Masticophis taeniatus girardi).

I've never heard of them eating bats, but they will eat almost anything they can catch so that's not surprising. I've seen footage of it's close cousin the Coachwhip (M. flagellum) eating bats like that.
