Peruvian Rainbow Boa Litter

Jeff Clark Aug 17, 2009 01:16 AM

Sunday morning at 2:30 I found Pastaza a large Peruvian Rainbow Epicrates cenchria gaigei, delivering her litter of babies. There were 10 live babies, 4 stillborn and 10 slugs. Pastaza is 11 years old and this is her first litter. I got her from Burgandy Reptiles in 1998. The PIC of her below is from a couple years ago. Pastaza has not looked right the last few months. I knew she was gravid but she looked like she was carrying a big load of slugs and would have trouble delivering them. Pastaza's sister died while gravid with a big load of babies a couple years ago. Pastaza and the babies are doing fine. The father of the litter is Leemo. He is around 7 years old and came from Larry Kenton. Both Pastaza and Leemo have 41 scale rows at midbody. I will post PICs of babies later.

Hey Jeff,

First off, congrats on the nice litter!! Also, I noticed that you mentioned she is 11 years old and this is her first litter, what are the reasons behind that? Just curious, after counting the number of stills, slugs, and live born babies do you feel like this is a much larger potential litter size than younger PRBs which you have bred in the past (if that applies)?

Ike,
....This is my first litter of Peruvian Rainbows. I think my first male Peruvian was the problem. I have two younger males that are unrelated to Pastaza or Leemo and they should be ready to breed Pastaza and Leemo's sisters next year.
