a bit off topic--renting with snakes?

SnakeCharmer77 Aug 18, 2009 07:35 AM

I am sure that most of you have houses, with plenty of room for your snakes, and no one to question them.
i am currently in a house but might have to be renting again here by the end of the year, or beginning part of next year.
i can find apts that will accept my cat, but is there anything i can do about my snakes? im willing to sell a few of them, but i dont want to get rid of all of them.
i dont want to get evicted because of the snakes, but i will have to have housing.
just curious..
thanks bunches.
take care

When I was renting I simply didn't mention the snakes to the first land lord as he never came round (even when I wanted him to!). The second I asked before I signed any thing if it was a problem for me to keep pet snakes and it wasn't, despite it saying 'no pets' on the leash. If you explain that they are harmless, clean and kept locked in a secure enclosure that will change alot of peoples minds. If you feed frozen thawed that helps too as live feeding puts people off...

Just ask if caged pets are OK I never had a problem with it when I was renting so long as I did that, and got a yes in writing.

I never mentioned that it would be snakes in the cages, rather than cute fuzzy things but they're still cage pets

What are you some kinda saint??? Why does the landlord need to know your business? Having four snakes is not like running a breeding establishment. Except for escapes, snakes are one of the best pets for appartment dwellers. Just don't display them when you are not home. If you are caught what is the worst that can happen?? Oh the can throw you out and kiss $$$ a month in retal fees goodby -- in a bad economy where good renters are hard to find.

Don't mention to them that you have snakes, but some apartment complexes will allow "caged animals" such as hamsters. If you can find something in the lease that says caged animals are ok, and doesn't specifically say no reptiles, you might have a shot at keeping them. I would still cover them up if management needed to come in for any reason. Hope this helps a little.

You can call and ask anonymously first. Any land lord that doesn't allow snakes or even requires an additional deposit is being unreasonable(if they know it or not). It's nice to be able to be honest with your landlord but if they are the type to think that your snakes will be pooping on the floor and chewing up the carpet, I would just not mention them. If it's an apartment where they do mandatory fire and maintenance inspections routinely(while you're not there) then you can throw towels over the cages, put a bunch of pillows under the blankets on the bed to make it look like there is a big guy crashed out and leave the TV on. They will be less nosy if they are trying to avoid waking up a big guy while invading his house. Worked for years for me.

The standard form that most property owners/managers use states that reptiles can be housed in the apartment/house as long as they are caged.

Its up to the owner/manager to alter the verbage.

I cheat by having larger than a 10 gallon fish tank. 10 gallons? What can you put in a 10 gallon tank?

It depends on where you live, but generally speaking the less
that they know the better.

My property manager was actually into snakes at the apartment
I used to rent so I was covered. I was lucky as hell. Everyone
that worked in maintenance know who I was. They had a small army
or people working there. It was pretty cool.

I would ask and anonomously and if they have a problem either dont tell them or find somewhere else. Snakes are pretty easy to hide if you don't keep them in elaborate enclosures. Hope your snakes are ok. I am the guy you got butters from. I think he's the one you named that.

HEYYYYYY!!! :D
yes, you are correct. i got him from you. hes grown some, of course. and hes the weirdest eater i have, so far...lol
but hes a sweety, and very curious. if i bring him into the living room and sit at the desk he wants to get on it and check it out.
i put him in with the big female for a couple of times for the last two or three weeks in may. i witnessed copulation, but have yet to see any eggs or any 'weird' behaviors on her part...lol
maybe it just wasnt right for her, but he was sure interested
hes a sweetie and doing pretty ok

Im suprised he is a wierd feeder. I never had any problems with him eating. I think the only time he ever missed a meal was during shed. Hopefully he will come around.

I see you finally got you a boa. Thats awesome.
