What does your dragon like to eat?

lizzettebarcel Aug 22, 2009 09:12 AM

I just discovered that my girl LOVES rose petals! Not hybrid roses... but the heirloom, common shrub kind that produced the rose hips! I tasted some myself the other day and they are actually pretty sweet. I offered them to the dragon and she could not wait for me to set them in her bowl! Snatched them from my fingers!

She also goes crazy for dandelion flowers, their very young, baby leaves and fresh picked blueberries. Does not like cherry tomatoes, kale, or blackberries. She loves zuccini squash blossoms! Is picky about winter squash blossoms though, does not fancy them.

I feed my animal only fresh stuff and crickets. Soon will add silkworms. I do not open a can or bag of anything to feed her.
What fresh things haev you noticed that yours like?

Hi Wanda..my beardies enjoy mulberry leaves, which I have in abundance on my tree, and they LOVE clover leaf.

OMG, you don't say! I ran out to my yard and offered fresh mulberry leaves to my dragon. She seems to be more fond of wild rose petals, though. But my red footed tortoise went BANZAI!!!

My dragon isn't into clover leaves. I've tried them. The turtle devours them though

Your dragon just got spoiled with the rose petals[ like candy] Try the leaves when she's more hungry..they are full of calcium. All my babies to adult eat them

We don't have mulberry, but mine love fresh hibiscus leaves and flowers. It's funny to see how they respond to different colors...some like only red, some will eat any color. They also like green peas, green beans, yellow squash (some do), mango, and sweet potato.

Funny, I grew green peas and green beans and mine could not care less for them.

By the way, she eventually did devour her mulberry leaves! I Sooooooo appreciate that feedback! I learned that they have a lot of protein.

My dragon seems to be most attracted to yellows, pinks and blues. But not reds. She completely ignores her cherry tomatoes. She is not enthused about blackberries but snatches blueberries out of my fingers! And she loves her pink rose petals.

This is her first summer with me and she is doing awesome. Growing very well and enjoying the sun out in a bird cage in the yard, during the day. She hates the sound of the lawnmower! But I bring her in to her tank at night.

Sweet, good natured lizards they are

Mine like all the dark leafy greens,turnip,mustard,collard...they supply the most nutrients, loaded with calcium so no need to use much calcium supplementation.

I forgot about blueberries...everyone loves those.

Everyone likes turnips, mustard, collards, kale is so-so. One flat out refuses to eat kale.

Each one really does have his own preference!

Yellow flesh papaya(mexican papaya) is an excellent choice for supplementing greens on occasion. Dragons seem to like the taste of papaya very much too. It contains an enzyme that aids in digestion and breaks down hard insect matter. Acidophilus, a well known super digestive tract conditioner for lizards contains small amounts of papaya extract.

That's a good one I didn't think about.

By the way, have you guys tried offering them baby foods? Sometimes I handfeed mine the leftovers from my gargoyle.. She likes squash and carrots

I have a rescue that has joint and jaw problems from a combination of MBD and being housed with a very aggressive male. It is hard for him to eat leafy greens, so I supplement his diet with squash, sweet potato, and green bean baby food.

I've thought about papaya but it seems so weird to me and I don't care for the smell. It's a personal handling issue I guess, lol!
