Light Tent Test Photos

TopNotchBoas Aug 22, 2009 11:05 PM

I borrowed this setup from a friend. I've been wanting to give this a whirl on boas for a while now. As many who follow my posts know I typically use a method that involves bouncing the flash off the ceiling to soften the light. Well, I recommended to this type of setup to Jeff Ronne because he is really tight on space where he has to do his photos.

Overall I think the results were fairly good. The housing for the bulbs I used were just some $5 clip ons from Home Depot. I couldn't find anything higher than 23 watt fluorescents around the house so I used those. If I used some 75 watters (the max those housings are safe with) I could have gotten much more depth of feild (better photos).

Here's what the setup looks like:

08 Arabesque Sunglow Male

08 Sunglow Female (sibling to the above Arabesque Sunglow)

09 EBV Salmon (First to go through 3rd shed)

All the shots were white balance calibrated with "whibal. I recommend it for all lighting setups shot with DSLR's but even more so with this type of setup.

Whatcha think?

I think I like my usual bounce flash shots better but this is probably a good alternative for those not wanting to spend so much... or those without the room for bounce flash. This setup will probably cost you less than $50 or so for everything. Whereas my flash alone is well over $200 if I remember correctly.

Wow nice color on those sunglows. I need to make a photo area. Any tips on making one.

I've experimented with different backgrounds. Natural backgrounds with wood... solid colors...you name it.

I've found the most important factor to be lighting. If you're setting something up for indoors I'd start with a similar lighting setup to what I described above and experiment with backgrounds from there.

That tent is fine. The Chondro guys have been using the photo box/tent for quite some time. Shows any animal in it's best light.
