Cutting Heat Cable ?

geofri Aug 24, 2009 12:05 PM

I have a length of heat cable purchased from spyder robotics a year ago.
I never ended up using it for what I got it for, and just decided I needed to build another rack before leaving for school (tomorrow, lol). The cable is 2x the length I need.

Does anyone have prior experience shortening this type of heat cable? I am not sure what might be in the end of the cord, in the plastic tip. Or if it would be fine to cut it in half, and ad another piece of cord and plug to the new piece..

Thanks,
Andy

With this type of manufactured cable, you should not cut it, as it may be ruined in the process, not to mention the safety issue.

From a purely technical answer to your question, one would have to cut open the end termination to view the electrical termination of the cable to see if it is parallel-wired or series-wired. Then the cable could be cut and terminated the same way. And sealed. With nichrome wire, this isn't always as easy as it seems. That is why I suggest you run the extra cable out from the rack and use it to heat another cage perhaps or something like that (in other words, don't cut it.)

OK, thanks mark.I think ill figure out something to do with the extra cable. i do have a cage next to the rack that i could possibly loop the extra cable under.

thanks again!
