"Berry" Boa? Need explanation.

RyanT Aug 24, 2009 01:40 PM

I'm considering a trade but don't fully grasp what this is supposed to be. The guy's telling me she's a "Berry" Boa, paid $3,500 for her, she's been the talk of shows, there are hets for them, not a lot of literature about them. I haven't kept any Boas for about 5 or 6 years now, but I know who John Berry is. And while to me most Boas are even harder to distinguish than some of the Ball morphs, I don't see how this is anything other than a Pastel Boa. Great looking snake regardless, just curious about the back story. Thanks for any insight.

That one looks like a nice pastel boa to me not a blood boa. Here are some pictures and some info from John Berry's website about his Blood Boas. Hope this helped you out and shows you what a Blood Boa should look like.

2 month old Berry Blood Boa.

9 month old Berry Blood Boa.

18 month old Berry Blood Boa.

Our own line of proven PURE Central American Blood boa.

Produced from breeding a pure original line Blood boa male with a 100% het, new blood line Blood boa female. These are true dwarf Central American Blood boas (Boa c. imperator), with no Colombian locality or other lines crossed in at all. The breeder male is barely 3ft long and the female is just over 5ft !! The female that started this line was a high orange, farmed boa originally from western Nicaragua.

The offspring are the most genetically diverse pure Central American Blood boas available. The 100% hets are the only Blood boa hets to carry both the new Berry Blood and original Blood line genes.

The neonate Berry Bloods are a high orange - red and the 100% hets display a large amount of pink, red coloration. It will be interesting to see how these little guys change color as they mature.

Take care
Tom

probably one of the most easy-to-recognize traits of a blood boa is the eye.

Definitely needed that to help clear up my confusion. And now that I've thoroughly researched Blood Boas, I guess they're kind of along the same line as Pieds in Balls...expensive and hugely popular, but ugly as Hell. I just don't get/see the appeal at all.
