Baytril not working..what next? MN area

akhanna Aug 25, 2009 09:55 AM

My adult male BP, had mouth rot. Vet put him on a cycle of .3 ml of Baytril every other day for 2 weeks. Everything cleared up nicely but 4 days after the last dose of Baytril (spelling??) his head swelled up badly I took him back to the vet and he was put on a 2nd round of Baytril (.7ml every other day) however there has been no change in the swelling. I've gotten an x-ray which showed no bone infection. The Vet is currently researching other antibiotics...she tried giving amoxcilin (I think) but was unable to get the shot through 3 progressivley larger gauge needles (too thick of a liquid).

So 2 questions:
1) what is another antibiotic that can be used..note this is NOT respritory.
2) Anyone know a good Reptile vet in the Twin Cities Area? This one was recommended by someone at TCR in Minneapolis but having to look up meds doesn't inspire confidence.....

A second opinion might be good, but a vet that double checks the books is better than one who gives the wrong drug because He/She doesn't want to admit He/She is unsure. just my 2 cents.

This is a website to Dr. Stahl - probably one of the best reptile vets around. If he is not in your area you can send your snake to him or have your vet consult with him.

Good luck.

Who did you go to?

Local vets that I would recommend would be
Como Park Animal Hospital in St. Paul (I've seen Dr. Casey and Dr. Troye, both of which were good)
http://www.comoparkanimalhospital.com/
Lexington Pet Clinic in Eagan (Dr. Kizer)
http://www.lexingtonpetclinic.com/

There may be others that are good, but these are two that I can think of. Good luck! The above Drs won't just throw Baytril at the problem and hope it goes away...
