Baby Box Turtles Biting Each Other

spycspider Sep 16, 2003 09:55 AM

We hatched 2 baby box turtles about 3 weeks ago and right now they are still about an inch long. Anyway one guy, the smaller one, is starting to bite the other one a lot more these days. He's not even mistakening him for food. He stares at the other guy and then snaps right at his head. We are currently keeping these turtles in a 10 gallon tank and are wondering should we separate the two? Thanks!

We had this problem when we had 8 babies in a 40 breeder tank. It lessened a lot when we made more hiding spots and put in more plants and things, so they could all hide without being cramped, and if out wandering they rarely bumped into each other. They did seem defensive about being crowded into hiding caves, though.

If they are biting at each other, I would definately either separate them, or provide them with a lot bigger area. The one that is biting could bite off the tail of the other, as well as causing injury to legs, head eyes, etc., of the other turtle. Also the more aggresive turtle could dominate the other during feeding time.
