Update on my beardie's condition.....

lkt Sep 16, 2003 10:34 AM

Kiana picked up a pseudomonas bacteria somewhere. Could be her crickets, her bathtub (although I always clean it up after a bath), who knows?

She won't hold still for the shots (Baytril) so I have to use a towel. She calms down after about 10 seconds of holding her still so it's not too bad, although I'm sure that she would say otherwise.

I'm going to have to feed her before the shot in the evening, though, because she's too stressed out afterwards to eat.

Her colors sure look good after her injection, though. :^

your initial post down below? It might help calm your dragon alot. My girl never flinched when I gave her shots, doing as I posted below. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll repost.

Good luck!

and I intended to try it but I wanted to take some other precautions first, AFTER I've got the injection process down.

I want to get some gloves, for one thing, in case she decides to let me know it's not working for her. I also don't have a spare plastic tub anymore (broke it moving it with sand in it for her outdoor play time) so I have to pick up another one. Bathing her in the bathtub then running her downstairs to the pool table (the best lit table in the house that we don't eat off of) is a little extreme for maintaining a relaxed atmosphere!

Thanks for the reply!

You really can't be running thru the house with a wet dragon
Sure, pick up a plastic bin when you can and soak her before and after. It might make a big difference in her tolerance and the ease in which the needle goes in. You don't have to push it in too far, just till the bevel is under the skin. The soak afterwards has got to feel good.
Keep us posted!

My vet recommended the oral liquid for my beardie (Ojay) when he developed mouth rot from a pseudomonas bacteria. In fact, the Baytril never killed the pheudomonas and now Ojay's currently on Ciprofloxacin liquid. It's pretty expensive, but I hope it does the job. Be careful with this very nasty bacteria, it's contagious to your other dragons.

is more effective than the oral? My vet said that the orals they have don't work well on pseudomonas and that's why she gave me the injectible. She also said they don't taste good. I've dealt with bad tasting orals before and I think giving shots is preferable. At least you knowing it's going in.

I don't have to worry about other beardies. So far, the 3 month fight with coccidia (which was won), an 4 month old that insisted on brumating after treatment (against all efforts to keep her up and eating to recover from the loss of appetite), and now this, has kept me from desiring another.

I remember reading somewhere that the injectible is absorbed better and works more effectivly than the oral. And my gosh, the Baytril liquid reeks! It smells so bad that I almost gag when I have to get a dose ready. I felt to bad for my beardies when I gave them the liquid Baytril. Thank goodness that is all over. Next time if I have to give the oral Baytril, I will add some cherry flavored vitamin B to it. Maybe that will help.

I just hope that the Baytril clears up your beardies pseudomonas, because it didn't work for mine. You may want to keep this drug in mind - ciprofloxacin. It is also used as an antibiotic against inhalation Anthrax. It's a little spendy - one pill broken down into a powder and put into a liquid suspension cost me $35. Yikes. But it's well worth it. It cleared up one of my beardie's pseudomonas infection last year. Now I'm using it on two beardies this month.

I'm glad to hear that your coccidis fight was finally won. Do you use Parazap now? Boy I sure do.

I do the 5 days of dusting method. Never tried the tea.

The problem I have with Kiana is that she refuses greens of any kind, for the most part. It doesn't matter what sort of colors I add (pansies, day lilies, carrots, roses, squash, etc.), she takes a bite or two (usually when I'm not watching) and is done with it. It makes it hard to get her the Parazap because I only feed bugs every other day, and I dust with Calc. w/D3 on all of those days. I'd like to be able to give her some food occasionally w/o dirt all over it. :P
