Looking for more input on strange acting R. Brev...Chris, Morgana?? I'm at a loss

trinacliff Sep 16, 2003 10:41 AM

I'm not sure if I should try rearranging some things in her enclosure or not...in case she is looking for a place to lay an unfertile clutch. I'm at a loss as to what to do. My gut tells me to get her into a new, more ventilated environment, but I don't want to cause her to not lay then have her become eggbound.

Chris, Morgana, have you ever seen any act this way?

She's looking thin, and the dull brown color...I'm assuming that she's not eating. She is still pacing the right side of her cage...and I'm totally at a loss.

If this was your Pygmy, what would you do?
Thanks for any help or input!
Kristen

Kristen,

What substrate do you have in the enclosure?

Yes, I have seen females pace.... usually they are looking for the right place to lay eggs - but sometimes not.

Personally, I think they can see through the glass and want to continue walking... the glass is an invisible barrier - something they don't understand.

I had one do that a couple years ago - paced and paced. I finally removed her, placed her in a non-see-through plastic tub, and gave her coconut bark (forest bed) for substrate. She walked around and around, found a good spot and layed her eggs.

After a few days, I returned her to her original vivarium. She seemed to get over it.

Most of our females dig right next to the plexiglass...most often in a corner. Only one has dug next to the mossy log.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Morgana...I appreciate your input. Do you happen to remember if the one that you had that paced was more of a drab color at the time she was pacing? She's an awful solid brown, with kind of a green tint...she's normally a really pretty light color with black stripe and blotches here and there. Here's a picture of her with her normal colors...I'm trying to get a picture of her now, but the glass is dirty so it's hard to get one through the glass.

I'm using aquarium gravel, then soil, then reptibark. I think I might try what you said that you did. Is she old enough to lay an unfertile clutch? She doesnt' look like she could possibly have any eggs in there...what's your experience with these young ones??? Thanks!

Kristen,

The brevs can be sexually mature at 3 months... so 5 months, she could be gravid! Sometimes the first clutch is only 2 eggs.. most commonlt 3. With future clutches, that can increase to 5-6

The dark colour can be just stress..... more like frustration - if she is pacing.

Hope this helps,

Kristen,

Here is how most of the females look when depositing eggs....
This one (Mary) was right against the plexiglass.

Now tell me where she was hiding those eggs..?????

Thanks Morgana...how long did you keep her in the temporary set up? Did you just put a plant and a few limbs in there for her to climb on?

It just baffles me that something this small could lay eggs. She is so incredibly tiny...she's looking thin to me too...here's a picture of her from the front...excuse the crummy pic quality, but you can see her color, etc. I had two better pic's but something is wrong that they won't load...corrupt or something...and now my son is sleeping in there with her. I'll try to get better pic's later.

Thanks again!
Kristen
