New house for the hognose

katyrose Aug 27, 2009 06:39 PM

Hey everyone,

I am new to the world of hognose snakes but have been lurking for a while and admiring all the awesome pictures posted here. I have a 1-year-old western hognose named Neil, normal morph, he is a handsome devil though. Neil has been in a 10-gallon aquarium until now, but I'd like to upgrade his home. The catch is, I need something stackable because I also have a lovely fox snake (Scarlett) and not a lot of space. I've looked at the Animal Plastics and Vision cages online... any recommendations? Other brands to check out? I want to be able to have deep substrate for Neil since he really digs... digging. Hahaha. So I am a little worried about the sliding doors.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

p.s. I am trying to attach a picture of Neil... we'll see if this works!

Nice looking hog, they are great little snakes.
We have a homemade breeder rack with sliding doors and they are up 1"off the bottom. They enjoy digging around in the aspen.
The vision cages have the track up a bit off the bottom. We prefer the sliding doors, they remove for cleaning and just blow the aspen out of the way when it happens. Just my two cents.

What a gorgeous snake! Thanks for the tips. I've considered building my own but i am not all that handy, haha... it would probably take me a while! Maybe something to think about though, it could be a fun project and would probably turn out less expensive!

Good looking little Hoggie!

Have you considered making your own? Either a rack (using large tubs) or a vivarium stack (made from wood). If going for a vivarium stack just make sure you install a decent substrate dam - around 3" or so and he'll have plenty of room to dig. Pretty much every vivarium in the UK/Ireland (where I live) has sliding doors and they work great.

Hmm, I will have to look around for plans/ideas on building my own and see if it's an option. I am not the handiest but i follow instructions pretty well, haha! Thanks for the tip!
