Is my ackie male or female?

Csharp Aug 28, 2009 07:34 PM

Picked up this guy/gal at last years NARBC in Anaheim, and it was sold to me as an approx 6 month old male. Since then it hasn't really put on much size, maybe 3-4 inches, and not much in the way of bulk. A friend asked about my "female" monitor when he was over and saw it, and that got me questioning things. Anyway, I've included a few ventral pics and an overall as well as head shot to help with this. I'd like to pair it up or set up a trio soon(NARBC is next weekend) so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Chris

A picture looking down over the head would help, but I am pretty sure it is a male. Almost all the time you buy an ackie at a show, it is a male. People usually keep a bunch of females with a couple of males. Females are harder to buy and usually cost more. With ackies, a lot of people buy 3 or more babies to raise up in order to get females. I would not buy a male, unless you are sure you have a female. If you have a female and buy another female, no problem getting a male. If you have a male and buy another male,it will be real hard to find 1 or 2 females, also the males may fight.
Good luck, Joe Kahn

I'd lean towards a male there. It's not as clear-cut as some Ackies. Yellow Ackies are bred quite readily these days and finding females is not that difficult, although as stated, you'll be paying more for a girl. In some more rare Monitor species, yes, good luck finding an unpaired female....
