Spider spinning

Thomas S. Aug 28, 2009 09:07 PM

I picked up a Spider this past weekend. Absolutely beautiful snake. I checked it out before I bought it to make sure it didn't have the head wobble problem. But now I'm seeing a spinning problem with the snake I didn't notice before. I contacted the breeder who said he'd do the right thing.

So here's my question: is the spinning a thing they grow out of? If i kept her would this be a trait she'd pass off to her offspring? I love her color and pattern. If she's healthy otherwise, should I keep her or trade her in?

I would really appreciate any information and/or opinions.

My male has no wobble or spinning issues and neither does his offspring . . . . I would personally not breed a spider with a wobble or any other types of major issues. If I were you I would return it and get a different morph from that collection unless he has multiple spider breeders. . . This is of course just MHO. . . .

Hi,

You are crazy.....Head wobble and spinning are just part of a spiders genetics. If you don't have it your are not handling it. And if you don't have it you did not get a true spider. Every spider I have ever had did it as a baby and they do grow out of it to an extent. It won't kill the snake and I find it really cool when mine cork screws on the carpet. She does not seem to mind and neither do I. I love the spider snake and I love the spider combos.

You go girl...

Hey,

If I bought a spider and it did not wobble or spin I would want my money back....That would suck. You might as well have bought a Pastel....

I am happy I didn't get any spiders in my collection.

If what you say is true (I heard the inverse) then I don't see why I should be working with them.

I hope there is some who do not wobble and people are trying to get this problem out of the gene pool.

Yes,

You are right. You should not breed them. They would make terrible additions to your snake room...And you might want to read the other replies here before you single me out. I can only speak on my own experiences. Good enough for me. I don't care what you do.

Brian, I think you need to get some more spiders lol!

Seriously though, the potential for wobble is just part of the spider genetics. There's absolutely no way you could guarantee that any spider (or it's offspring for that matter) won't display any wobbling.

I think for the most part if you talk to some of the "experts" they will tell you that ALL Spiders have a wobble of some type whether you can see it or not. If they dont wobble when they are just cruising around or sitting there they will get a bit of a wobble as they get ready to strike at their prey. I am not one of those experts by any means but I was just lending to you what I have heard and read about them over the years. I have over a dozen Spiders of my own from Normals to het for Ghost and some Bumblebees. I would say that most of them have a wobble of some type from the smallest that you can hardly notice to some of them that seem to arch over backwards from time to time nearly 180 degrees. I think you will hear strong arguments from oth sides of they do wobble, they dont wobble. Some people will come on here and swear that their Spider has absolutly Zero wobble or unusual movements to it and then someone else will come on and say if it has no wobble at all it must be the only one in the world. Mine does not really bother me so if you like it I would keep her(him)and just accept it as a Spider trait. Thats my 2 cents worth. I sure would like to hear from some of the bigger breeders on the subject again. Jay

All spiders have the possibility of wobbling -- it comes in varying degrees, some get it when they are older some get it when they are younger and some grow out of it. It's genetic with all of them. If you breed your spider she could throw any degree of wobbler. If you can't deal with it -- then don't get spiders or spider crosses. If someone tries to tell you their spiders don't wobble have them guarantee it (and all offspring) in writing.

It looks like you are getting the answers I thought you would. Jeff L is pretty big breeder out here and I see he has the same feelings on the Spiders. Everyone seems to pretty much agree. And I agree with the guys that say get more Spiders. See Spiders are the key to a very large number of Ball Morphs. If you have not seen it Google Ball Python Morphs and look at NERD's website of Morph pictures. I have about 14 or 16 Spiders and their combos and they go from not noticeable all the way to the as I said before corkscrewing and nearly turning over backwards.. Keep her(him)you will love it especially when you see your first Bumblebee come out of these beauties. I will try to attach the website.

http://www.newenglandreptile.com/nerd/index.php/ball-pythons/nerd-s-ball-python-collection.html

Just highlight the above address and go to the bottom of the page and see all the combos they are makig with Spiders. Good luck.

Thanks a bunch to you and everyone who replied! I sure feel a lot better now. I really want to keep her because she is beautiful like I said and has almost a full stripe down the middle of her back. I want to see if she passes THAT trait to her offspring.
