My Veiled Always Hides

I have a big boston fern in his cage and I almost never see him. I think he's dead but when I look for him I find him in the leaves and he hurries off. Should I not have such a big plant? I guess he is eating because he's been doing this for 3 months. Will he ever become less shy? Thanks.
