NEED HELP NOW! EVERYONE

I am located in Bonduel Wi, I have asked for them to change their ordiance from 2 ft max to 6 ft; however, the following is a letter from the village attorney.

The board has made it cleared that they don't care about what I want as a pet but they are thinking what is best for the village, even if that means writing laws based on fears and phobias.

My next step, I have brought in proof to show these are not dangerous, I have brought in proof that the villages of the surrounding areas do not even agree that this is fair, I have also brought forth the fact that in any pet store you can buy these aniamalsl however there are no pet stores in OUR town is their response. So what do I need to do, I to go to the streets and I need to write a petition and take to the streets, I need to fill that board room with people, the only thing I need right now is what should I write on the petition, I hit the streets tomarrow at 6:00pm.

Thanks

matt

I think the easiest solution would be to just move elsewhere. It doesn't sound like the village is willing to listen to your case.

With all due respect, I strongly disagree. Not only do I think he should fight this, I think we all should be helping him out and trying to get this out to the public. Since when should "we the people" let a government entity make laws based solely on unsubstantiated personal opinion and irrational phobias? This is a perfect public relations opportunity that can be used to educate the public.

Thanks,
Ed

Great post and I agree!

I had a hard time reading the letter, but from what I gather there isn't any support by those making decisions to accommodate you or to change the ordinance from 2 ft. to a larger size allowed.
None allowed that may grow larger than two feet is a ridiculous limitation. Very few snakes would meet that criteria, and almost none commonly kept in captivity. Those micro species that would be allowed have such a specialized diet as to not make practical captives.
The part where the writer mentions the stories in the media of snakes escaping into neighborhoods and becoming a problem simply reinforces my argument that the issue is entirely a cultural one.
The key is education. This goes deep into the Anglo Christian Protestant psyche. Lets move from the Dark Ages.

It just seems that the smarter we get, the dumber we become. My point being -- when we as Americans increase our mobility and improve our access to technology and information, the more we as a society choose to behave in a very ignorant manner.
In America we have the ability and freedom to achieve and to actualize our lives to a greater degree than anywhere else on the planet and/or ever in the history of Man...and we always seem to choose the low road to enlightenment.
There has got to be something deep within our ancestral DNA we are not conscious, that holds us back.

If we are moving out of the Dark Ages, then you have to stop using language such as Anglo Christian Protestant pysche. Some of us Anglo Christian Protestants just love our reptiles.

When you want others to respect your view, you first have to respect theirs. You don't have to agree with it or like it, but you have to understand it, look at things from their point of view, then build a respectful argument to win them over. Come across in an insulting, superior manner is not going to persuade the other side to listen.

If this is Wisconsin we're talking about, why are they concerned about tropical animals getting loose???? At least the local stuff knows how to hibernate.

I wasn't being insulting or disrespectful. I suggest you stop being so defensive.
It is a fact early America was primarily settled by Christian Anglo Europeans. The Martin Luther's of the day. And they settled heavily in Wisconsin.
Then came the Irish, the Italians, the Poles, the Czechs, the the Chinese, the Mexican and Central Americans.
Mostly Catholic Christians, with the exception of the Chinese. Not welcomed by the prevailing Christian denomination at the time, the Protestants.
Still the prevailing religion in Wisconsin. Still resistant to new philosophies.

Truth is, the snake is only persecuted in the Judeo-Christian faiths. Hindus and Aussie Aboriginals still worship snakes.

My wife's Pentecostal uncle thinks I'm a Satan worshiper because I keep snakes. I think he's a nutcase

Just thought I would let you know that all that things are changing as far as view in churches in Wisconsin. I personally am the children's pastor at an Assembly of God Church and the church is just fine with me not only having snakes but planning on breeding and having a larger collection. From what I have seen most people are surprised that snakes are really a pet and then they stop and start asking questions. It is fascinating to a lot of people.
