Favorite kings?

varanid Sep 03, 2009 09:38 AM

Personally, I love florida/brooks and splendida. I'm wondering how many others favor something besides the california king.
Now that I'm out of medical debt, and in decentish health again I'm starting to get back into snakes on a serious level. I've decided to work with retics, house snakes and a couple of varities of kings--brooksi right now, and I'm looking at getting splendida later. I love the mix of color and the speckled appearance of the flordiana/brooksi and just the pattern/color on a desert king is WOW. Wonderful.

Mexican blacks are another favorite...so shiny and pretty

My favorite king has got to be Thayeri with Mex Mex running a VERY close second.

As far as Common King snakes....
I really like Holbrooki and Splendida, but this Brooksi craze has me wanting some multiple hets to produce cool variable clutches similar to that of Thayeri but with morphs.....

There are definitely a good number of interesting types, but the Outer Banks(sticticeps), and floridana are way up there on my list of favorites as far as getula is concerned. Hard to exclude the awesome "sock-head" high-yellow variety of splendida too though.

Mountain Kings?,....oh yeah!, musn't forget those, etc.........

Hmmm, seems to be more than just a few cool types..hahaha!!

Id have to go with Gray Bands, and for getula, I like mine- holbrokii, getula getula, and my chocolate Cals, never got into the desert Cals, though find them attractive, yet the Eastern Black King L.g.nigra has caught my eye recently...

Man, I love double whoppers with cheese. Burger would have to be my favorite as well. I like to eat more often than I like to clean snake enclosures. So yeah, definitly Burger.

DMong Sep 03, 2009 04:21 PM

I knew a guy that got Salmonella from eating a sandwhich while he was cleaning snake cages.

Not the greatest of ideas..LOL!

varanid Sep 03, 2009 04:44 PM

Dumb, but I've done it. Have a meal on my desk while I'm cleaning.

DMong Sep 03, 2009 05:23 PM

Yeah, I know what you mean,....I have probably done this before too, and have caught myself doing it perhaps just in time before something real bad happened. Definitely not holding a sandwhich in one hand while cleaning poop with the other, but going inside after cleaning, and get side-tracked, then later on grabbing a bite. This is really just as bad if ya' think about it.

I ALWAYS try to remember to immediately go and wash with anti-bacterial soap afterwards. But slip-ups can easily happen over the course of many years. That is the scary part..LOL!

I always try to remember that dude's Salmonella poisoning story in the back of my head.....ARRRGH!!

LOL!,...No, that wasn't me, that's just some guy off the internet puking his brains out, but I can't say I have NOT ever been in his shoes before though...hahaha!

It didn't quite get to that point for me at Daytona during the festivities, but in 2007, it went until about 4:00 in the morning.

You know what they say,......all good things must eventually come to an end!......my hangover the next day never seemed to though.

Man, that's disgusting. I never ate while I cleaned snake cages. Never thought to ever.

I wonder if many do this LOL

varanid Sep 03, 2009 07:04 PM

2 am, hungry, can't sleep, see poop in a cage...grab the paper towels...go back to eating after barely washing hands...yeah I've done it.

There was also the time I did cage work drunk. One time. Never again. That was all sorts of horrible.

Yeah,...so maybe I had a bit too much to drink there too, I also ended up tearing the crotch out of my good pants that night as well.

But all in all, no real ill effects from the Salmonella munching , other than I can't quite get that far down when I "tear it up" now without tearing something other than my pants!..LOL!

I like locality burgers, bone white American cheese (axanthic), a patternless sprinkle of sesame seeds on a ghost white bun, toasted until golden, a chain pattern of albino onions, a couple slices of ripe hypererythristic tomatoes, 100% pure melanistic flame broiled beef no hybrid, with a double clutch of fries.

I would attempt to own every single type of King... but from my experience with the ones I have kept easily here in Texas are certainly some of my faves
Speckleds
Brooksi/Floridana
MBKs
Goini
however I have always loved Thayeri and Mt Kings too. Mike Russos Alterna pics make me want to give those a try.
If I could only keep one type though...it'd be Brooksi.

Florida kings.aka Brooksi~

becuase they are bullet proof captives. easy to care for. Easy to get to eat. Tough as nails. Perfect size for sweater box setups. And they really don't need extra care like hideboxes. They can stand extrme humidity (for instance overturned water dishes) ...basically a hard to ki9ll snake.

then with the recent new morphs . Yeah, they will be popular. better get in while the morphs are still in their infancy!

hah, they were one of my favorites as a kid...I'm getting some white sides from John Cherry this year Don't know about the other morphs.

bizkit421 Sep 03, 2009 08:49 PM

The ones I currently own... lol...
My desert phase cal king is really mellow and was my first snake, my albino cal king is a b*tch like me, and my sulfur lavander florida changes color every time he sheds... its too hard to pick a favorite, they're all awesome...

antelope Sep 04, 2009 02:08 AM

Jeez what a question. A few years ago I would have said splendida hands down were my favorites, and they still hold a large part of my heart along with specks, but I also made enough room for the mexicana, particularly graybands and thayeri, and I still find enough room to squeeze in mole kings, lol! All kings are great, I have a few of most but today if I have to narrow it down to one or two, I lean towards specks and thayeri, specks are too damn cool being native, and thayeri are a surprise, from hatchling to adult, or seeing what comes out of a batch of eggs.

Definetely albino PASTEL KINGs It's albino ruthveni x thayeri to get albino gene in thayeri.. and then thayeri added back and back and back and back again.. so almost pure thayeri again.. see pics below

thank you for your kind words. Actually I'm not crossing them. Just breeding them, I have got them as Pastels already some years ago.. And I just keep them and add new blood.

Thank you Tom. You are always kind. Sometimes man gets problems to breed something for non obvious reason.. just fate I would say.. I was trying to breed Symphysodon discus (fish) some 15-20y ago.. 3 attempts.. 1] after one year when fish big enough to breed so electricity black out in hot summer for 12 hours when I was away.. all fish dead.. two years later (after 1y I have decided to try again), central termostat breakedown.. water in aquariums was over 134F.. so all me breeding groups dead again.. another 2 years later (1y after I have decided to try again again) and desease.. So I have decided to put it off till I will be in pension.. which takes some another 30y from now.. and then I will succeed I hope..

Radim,
Those are some awesome snakes....
I've always thought they were the best hybrid on the market.

Just remember....
They will NEVER be pure thayeri again....and will always be hybrids....

Beautiful snakes.....

"Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part....."

Step11 Sep 07, 2009 11:37 AM

Actually I consider them as best snakes among all of them, regardless hybrids or not.. unless pure albino thayeri comes and breed..

It's always exciting when they are poping up.. based on head markings I'm assuming pattern.. color is moreless predictable bases on head appearance.. I have also other snakes and I love to see them hatch.. but when I should compare it with pastels, so it's boring..

I know they will be never pure.. that's why I have used word "almost".. but they can be pretty close.. But sometimes it's the only way.. And here it was the only way (at the moment) how to get albino gene into thayeri.. Btw, by similar actions were saved Europeans bisons just a few moments before their die out.. (thanks to america bisonos, not albino ruthveni ))

Pity is that even pure thayeri seems to be not pure very probably it's quite wide natural hybrid project with a few kings (sub)species involved..

But still my favorites and thank you for appreciating them.
