High Red Florida Kingsnake info

SnakeSlither Sep 16, 2003 02:27 PM

Does anyone know any info on these snakes? I rarely ever see them and I have the chance to pick one up(he's only about a week or two old) He's really wild looking but I'm wondering if that red/yellow pattern will fade as they get older or if they need any specail requirments?

thanks

I am sorry to say this but most of the red will go away with age, but it will still be a gorgeous animal. If you can see the parents of this hatchling you will see how much red it will retain. It will retain usually as much or a little more than the parents. If you can send a pic of the little one I am sure others here on the forum can tell you how much red it will hold into adulthood.

Great...thanks for the info. Will it still retain it's yellow bands though? I'm going to go ahead and purchase him in a week or two(need money) and then I'll have the picture up.

I would really need to see a pic but Florida Kings usually keep their yellow as adults.

You know what I could be wrong, but I think either I was just thinking of a diff. snake or they labeled the tank wrong but it looks exactly like this. Someone else posted that pic. on here not sure who though. Anyways thats what it looks like and I'm thinking Floridas have less black than that and more yellow. Am I wrong.

Keith Hillson posted that pic on Sep 5. It's an Eastern King, with a bit more red than normal (a lot more, actually). I have a neonate Florida King in which there is quite a bit of brown in the center of the otherwise nearly-all-black crossbands. It's probably actually a peninsula intergrade (Eastern/Florida).

I think the Florida Kings and intergrades generally have quite a few more crossbands than the Eastern Kings.
