Female looking to mate?

grooter2 Sep 03, 2009 09:01 PM

I have an over 5 pound 5ft female hypo jungle boa that I think wants to mate. I still think she is too young.
This is why I think she wants to mate but I may be wrong so some advice would be appreciative.

Okay earlier today I had my male sunglow out and I put him up to the pvc cage where the jungle boa female was but didnt put them together, Just behind the plexi glass and only for a few seconds. An hour later I misted the jungle boas cage and a couple hours later she is out (which she is always hiding, also just ate 3 days ago and went to the washroom 4 days ago)She is putting streak marks all over the plexi glass up and down going crazy and she is never like this. She is flicking her tonge like mad and when I took her out and put her near the male (which I would not let her out of my hands becuase I still think she may be to young to breed)she immediately wanted to go in the hide box where the male sunglow was. But I didnt I put her back into her cage.

I didnt think boas are interested in breeding now I thought the season was a few months ago. Could these be signs of her wanting to mate. She is still going crazy streaking up and down the cage. The temps are good and she is healthy as can be. This is so not like her to act this way.

What should I do? Most likely thinking bad idea to put them together when she is only 5 pounds and just over 5 feet right?

I'm definitely not going to put them together, I'll stick to my plan on waiting till the female is a lot bigger, just curious if those were signs of the female wanting to mate?

I've never seen a female boa do that, but I have seen a male do it. "He" definately wanted to breed.

Soooooo, are you sure your female is a "female"?????

I haven't posted in a long time, but thought I'd jump in here. My females have passed urates and smeared them around the cage when I've introduced males. I've read that it might contain pharomones (sp?) that attract the male. If that is the case, I would bet that your male will start pacing his cage trying to find her. Just a theory, who knows?
I think you are right with your gut that she is too small to breed. Could cause problems if she was successful.
I'm sure more experienced keepers can contrubute more!

My females will also smear urates, "after introduction of the male". My females "never" smear urates to "attract" a male that's not in her cage.

However, I have seen males smearing urates "before" introduction. Sort of like they're trying to attract a female.

Since the OP's snake was doing the smearing thing, without a male being there, it makes me think there's a possibility that his "female" could be a "male".

I just think it's worth double checking to be sure.

Now you guys have me worried "she" is a "male". Shortly after my male came out and was passing. The male cage is one below the females. After an a couple hours of streaking up and down the cage and going crazy she settled down but I will take her to tomorrow who can check to see if she is male or female. She is from Jeremy Stone and is pretty big for a male for her age so I'm sure she is female but I will double check just encase
