california toad sexing

bee_rad Sep 16, 2003 02:58 PM

do any of you know how to tell whether a california toad is male or female. ive got a few of them and they sometimes straddle each other. i dont know when they reach sexual maturity. they are about 8 months old and getting bigger by the day. i think you can sex them the same way as you can with an american toad. im not sure though. any feedback would be good. thanks.

Common ways to tell the Bufo boreas (California toad) apart
1)Males are smaller then females
2)When sexually mature the male will jump on the female back and he will try to clasp or embrace her
3)If a male is clasp he will make a birdlike sound to tell the other toad he is a guy.

Males also have a pale throat, has smoother skin, less dorsal marks, nuptial pads (thickened skin) on its forefeet during breeding season. California toads in the wild are sexually mature at 2 years of age.
