Snake drug Ivermectin - toxic to black milk

pweaver Sep 16, 2003 03:16 PM

Are any of you familiar with this drug?
I had a 2 year old black milk that hadn't eaten in about 6 weeks, so I took it into the vet. The fecal showed that it had strongyloides, and the vet said he'd recommend a shot of Ivermectin. He administered it on 9/10. Afterwards I read on the old forums here that it's very toxic to reptiles. Today (9/16) I found the milk dead in it's cage.
Has anyone else had any experiences with this drug?

Ivermectin is highly toxic especially when injected. Metronidazole is the prefered drug for strongyls.IMHO

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately your vet was not current on reptile medications. According to Klingenberg (DVM) the safest and most appropriate treatment for strongyloides is fenbendazole (Panacur)@ 50-100 mg/kg once a week for three weeks. I high reccomend reading his book. Heres a link to it.

I actually already have a copy of that book. It's really good. I didn't really know anything about Ivermectin at the time the vet recommended the shot. It was only afterwards when I searched the old forums that I started to get concerned.

JMartin is correct panacur is the thing for strongyls, sorry got my bugs confused. Injectable Ivermectin, atleast what I've used is administered at 1cc per 100 lbs. of animal. It would have to be really diluted to be safe for a small snake. It works great on hogs, cattle and dogs, I'd never use it on a herp.

I use ivermectin in a diluted spray form for treating cages and snakes for mites. Never had any problem. I dilute the crap out of it though.
