POSITIVE FECAL!!HELP WITH DEWORMING

hector96 Sep 05, 2009 11:43 AM

Need the help of some of the experienced folks on here.
I just recently purchased a Suriname Red tail Boa from an importer...Normally only buy captive bred but couldnt pass up on this specimen.

I did a fecal exam and she is infested with Strongyloides to be exact. What dewormer and what dosage should I use? I currently have Febendazole 25 gram paste 10% (100 mg/g) and Ivomec 1% (Ivermectin). Which one would be better or is there a different option?

I have alot of experience with worming dogs but not reptiles...I need help with dosage and administration? Thank you...

If you deworm your own reptiles I suggest owning Roger Klingenberg's Understanding Reptile Parasites. I believe there are dosages in there. As a personal rule I don't discuss specific dosages online because I have never met you, or your animals.

Ian,

I know about that book....However I prefer to get advise from experienced people and not some hand book...Theres nothing like hands on experience....I dont understand what the big deal is about helping someone online with info on meds and dosages! Why do you have to know me or my animals to help???? Why even post a reply to my post! ..If anyone out there can help out with info...it would be greatly appreciated....Thanks...

I replied to offer the reference.

My personal ethics arn't up for debate. The drugs you are using are prescription medications and while safe in comparison to others, are Rx for a reason. I don't know you, your ability to assess the animal's ability to handle being dewormed, your ability to assess the risks and at least make a pro/con list to deworming your animal... the list of "I don't knows because this is an online discussion" is endless. Dosages are more than just numbers and animals are not computers or cars.

Further, I am an registered animal health technologist. With this comes the responsibility to not overstep my bounds, of which I could lose my liscence. People with nothing to lose might be more liberal in what they offer.

If you want first hand experience, I suggest making contacts within a herp society. Their experienced members can work with you one-on-one and help you through any hurdles... something online members can only assume arn't there. Further, a veterinarian can work with you as well. If they are comfortable with you doing it yourself, then you can be comfortable with knowing you are doing it correctly.

No problem. I understand where your coming from. No offense intended. I did get some help already from local folks and also on the other forum some of the guys gave some advise. I opt to stay away from Vets because its hard to find one that specializes in exotics and they are a rip off......a tube of Panacur costs 7-8 dollars and a bottle of Ivomec cost $40 and either one will last you for a long time....all you can buy at any feedstore without a RX....A trip to the Vet cost a couple hundred dollars...
