New Pics of Yellow Thayeri Male...

Jlassiter Sep 05, 2009 11:05 PM

After taking a number of pictures of this guy I finally found a couple pics that truly show his real color...

Abbott line thayeri from Jim Minesinger.

He should make a great mate for my aberrant female (His sibling)...

John,

He looks really nice. Those pics show him off much better than the original group did. They will make a nice pairing!

John -- what a gem. Good luck with him (and his sister).
I'll admit that I have a "thing" for yellow leonis.

Below is a female I got from Jim Minesinger a few years ago. In the next post you can see how she has faded to a nice yellowish cream color, but as a hatchling she was a real stunner.

Here she is more recently. She has ZERO grey speckling, and appears to be somewhat hypomelanistic (her "black" is mixed with brown". I will try to breed her next spring with a nice orange reduced black Vivid male.

I would extremely happy if mine grew up to look like that....
Very Nice Tom...
I like the term "somewhat Hypomelanistic"....LOL

I am getting a reduced black project again from Michelle....
I produced two females back in 2002 with almost no black at all...
I never considered them hypo just reduced pattern no reduced pigment....
Yours looks real nice...Thanks for sharing.

John,
Yes, "somewhat hypomelanistic" is a weasely term, isn't it. I put it that way because some folks get exercised about claims of this trait or that trait. She does have some true black pigment, but a lot of it is definitely brown. So, if hypomelanistic is like "pregnant", I guess she's a little bit "pregnant". (Actually in other snakes with hypomelanism, I believe there are varying degrees of expression among individual animals (i.e., hypomelanism is not a strictly on/off condition). Whatever be the truth, I like the way the snake looks.

Below is hatchling pic of another female yellow leonis I bought from Mike Bodner. She's a year old now and is fading to a straw yellow, which I bet will end up a yellowish cream.

Tom,
What would you call this one?

John -- I'd DEFINITELY call them somewhat hypomelanistic. NO doubt about it. LOL!
That first one has nearly no black at all. Nice . . .

Below is a headshot of my somewhat hypomelanistic female as a hatchling. Definite melanin present in the bands!

Tom,
Mitch Allen produced that No Black female back in 2005....
I was working toward such an animal from that pair of females I produced back in 2002 from a Lemke X Vivid pairing......
I thought I was working on something no one else was and in 2005 I saw that girl on Mitch's table I had to get her since I had been beat....LOL

Now Michelle Rogers is working with a pair of No Black Applegate Thayeri VERY similar to that Mitch Allen girl...maybe nicer...
I managed to get a pair from her this year.....
They have small amounts of black on their dorsum, but should produce some 'no black' offspring....
I still would not call them hypomelanistic.....just reduced pattern not pigment.....

Here's some pics Michelle sent me of the pair I am getting soon from her....

Both of those are reduced black. The black pigment that is there is still a true black. If they were hypo, the black would be gray or brown.

No one ever said they were hypo.....
And I surely know what hypo means....again....
I believe they are reduced black thayeri.....
Not reduced pigment just reduced pattern.....
Why do you keep telling me on two different forums that they are hypo?
I never said they were and never will.....
I produced some of these in 2002 before this subforum started and knew even then they weren't....

John,

I am not correcting you...you have stated they are not hypo. I am referring to the pics in an attempt to clarify for other readers since you asked the original question and are providing photos. I am saying those are examples of reduced black, not hypos...for those who may still be confuzzled.
