babies! well, sort of

texasreptiles Sep 06, 2009 03:49 PM

Yesterday my common lancehead (Bothrops atrox) gave birth to 4 live babies. Three of the babies didn't make it through the night. The other one is doing fine. She also threw 49 un-fertilized ova!

This morning, one of my Boiga d. gemmicinta hatched, and there are three more good egg's to go. This was a 101 day incubation period! (I thought they would never hatch!)

The baby is doing very good, and has a weird, not typical pattern for a common lancehead.
And please, (not you Archie) don't call it a Fer-de-Lance! It's a common lancehead! LOL!

Archie,
It's pretty straight forward,

Bothrops atrox=Common Lancehead

Bothrops asper=Terciopelo

Bothrops lanceolatus=Fer-de-Lance

Of course there are other "common" names for all of the above.
For years, importers that imported B. atrox from Suriname, etc. called them Fer-de-Lance on their pricelists, and it stuck for a long time.
I recall many years ago Bill Lamar making a push to call the B. atrox, common lanceheads, and it didn't take for quite some time. Now I think's it's the norm, thus common lanceheads are B. atrox! Courtesy of Lamar in my opinion.
